Can CP fix this defense in one season?

I think to get to a top 10 defense, it will take 2 years.
But I believe they can get to a low 20's pretty quick. And continue to improve.

They may end up ranked 18 to 22 overall. However, if they can make the playoffs, and the defense gels and plays like a top 12 to 15, does it matter the overall ranking at that point.

As posted by others, what they do in FA and the draft is the key. So will Jerry & Son do what they say, and be more active in FA.

He has a lot on his shoulders to fix a mess that's been going on for several years. He's young, he appears extremely confident in his abilities which we all have to love! There's one thing to have confidence, and one thing to have support from those around you to get you what you need to make a successful defense.

Do you think he's able to make drastic changes to a poor defense in one year? Let's be realistic coog, we're not asking him to be #1 (if that happens, great!), but improvement is always a great thing. Getting key stops, showing improvement stopping the run, knowing our assignments etc! Please give your thoughts, i'm excited about the hire, are you???
In not sure of the excitement of hire. He hasn’t been a DC.

Can some improvements be made in first year. I’d hope so. When you’re at the bottom only one way to go.

That’s a reasonable and more practical goal.

Define fix.

I think the players will buy in to what the new coaches preach. I think the same players will perform better for this staff. I think the communication issues get fixed. I believe as a unit the defense will be better but not great. Maybe top 15-20 if they get a little help in talent.

It’s fixable now that there’s a new coach and DL (save one DE) is solid up front for the first time in eons. I’m convinced even an average DC could’ve had this defense ranked 10-12 slots higher than flus.

Define "fix". This defense going in the wrong direction can reverse course in one season. But is that fixed? I don't think so. I think it's unfair to expect CP to "fix" this defense in one season. Give him two seasons, and I think we'll have something on defense that can complement our offense.

totally agree with this

The emphasis should be fixing the defense the right way and build it for long-term success with quality acquisitions; not a quick fix with JAG FAs and questionable early round draft picks. It doesn’t make sense to hire a bright, young, albeit rookie DC and not give him the players he needs to make his defense competitive. The Cowboys don’t need an Eberflus 2.0 defense.

Can CP fix GM Jethro?

Geez. Seattle had the #1 defense and even they got their rear ends handed to them in the last two contests versus the Rams, where they gave up 1,060 yds total. IOW...if you don't have THE top defense (which the Rams do not) then you better bring a high powered offense (like the Rams) to the party...are they're not gonna let you in.

Defense wins championships these days when your defense is at or VERY near the top of the league...and even then it is no guarantee if your offense is trash...and that especially pertains to quarterback play.

Top 10 ain't gonna get it done, on either account. Dallas had top 10 units in 22' and 23'. Didn't even get close to the big show. They need to climb to where Seattle is...or damn close. Seattle had the #3 scoring offense to pair with it's #1 scoring defense. Cowboys have never had that combo since the 90s.

I think we need to aim for not just a middling defense but a top-10 unit or better. The ’22 and ’23 Cowboys still had issues: they struggled to stop the run and didn’t have an effective running game like the one we have now.

If we have a top-three offense paired with a top-10 defense, that might be good enough. But it's up to Jerry and Capboy to get the right people in place for this team.

We don't even know if he's gonna be able to fix it at all — let alone if he can do it one season. But if he's as intelligent and studied and diligent and prepared as his reputation suggests, with the addition of adequate talent on the field at positions key to his vision, I'd wager we could see a subtle improvement right away leading to a vast improvement by mid-season. Expectations are high but adversity is at hand.
