GREAT article. Cowboys need to be smart. Sometimes, the smartest move isn’t the biggest headline, it’s the one that makes the most sense for the roster long term. Odafe Oweh and Boye Mafe looked to be projected at around $19 million and $8–12 million. The Cowboys could have these two pass rushers for the amount they would spend on one of the superstars.

Odafe Oweh and Boye Mafe may not be superstar names like Trey Hendrickson and Maxx Crosby, but they will be much cheaper.

We all know the two big-time players every team wants this offseason. One is a trade target, Maxx Crosby, but does the cost of the trade and the contract match the need?

Trey Hendrickson will be a free agent and will have an expensive contract waiting for him.

Oweh and Mafe are also free agents with similar production as the superstars, but a much cheaper price tag. Let’s see how they all compare.

Give me Oweh and I'm a big believer in what this defense could be. I think he could thrive playing in a defense with our big 3 interior players....Tale of 2 seasons from him a year ago before and after the trade. He had 39 pressures and actually got to the QB 11 times once he went to LAC which came out to about a pressure every 6 passing snaps, being in on a sack once every 22 pass rushes....He isnt drawing the same attention a Myles Garrett is, but those are very similar ratios to what Garrett produced this year.

I’m with you

this guys skill set with quennen strength could make for a much much shorter window to throw

That’s the type of FA I expect. Not elite but solid players. That allows you to sign 4 guys or so. Ideally one at each need position so come draft day you just focus on best player at several positions rather than reaching to get a particular position

Numbers look legit for a player that may still have some runway on his abilities. Definitely Oweh over Mafe.

There’s a price point where Hendrickson makes sense. I don’t expect him to get that. He’s gonna rob someone.

A plus is that he's a 3-4 guy...having played with the Ravens and Chargers (2025)...although he's on the heavier side at 265lbs.

The Best Value for Dallas

Sign both Odafe Oweh and Boye Mafe. If the Cowboys could get both of these pass rushers for the price of Crosby or Hendrickson, why not?

This defense needs help getting to the quarterback and a pass rush consisting of these two players and Donovan Ezuiruka could create chaos for offenses.

Give me both….sigh Thompson and Dean. I’m satisfied.

Agree, save the draft capital and get two capable players for the price of one

Tyson Thompson ?

We’ve got some smaller speed guys to pair with him. I don’t want to trade for players. Sign FA for each of our biggest beef positions. LB, safety, CB, edge. Theses would not be elite but solid players. But that gives you flexibility in ghe draft. If an elite guy doesn’t fall to 12 at a position of need then move back a bit and add more picks. If downs, Delane, styles was there then just pick them. Mccoy coming off an injury cones with risk. But move back some and take next best and add a pick, key is get starter quality players. This draft is make or break to me. You go all in you have to get it right

There are plenty of good options, and we’re just getting started with cuts and trades. Many teams are making sacrifices, not just the Cowboys.

Even if some Cowboys fans think other teams blow their caps apart, while the Cowboys don’t, the reality is all 32 teams are making moves to manage their caps.

There will be plenty of good players available without needing to make outrageous trade offers, like for Max Crosby, especially as other pass rushers become available.

This is only the beginning, with more action expected between March 9th and 11th.

I believe there will be plenty of opportunities, whether they go for cheaper options or Tier 2 players, as long as the goal is building a defense that helps Christian Parker succeed and improves last year’s poor defensive rankings.

A strong defense doesn’t need to be full of superstars—we’ve seen that in the Super Bowl.

A free agency haul of Oweh, Mafe, Thompson, and Dean (even though his injury history bothers me) would be a very good start to the offseason.

The draft would be where they can land a CB and be flexible regarding trading down for more picks or focusing on selecting the BPA.

Not sure we would be willing to pay 16-18 mil a year for Oweh. One semi good season after being traded away by the Raven during the season.

16-18 for 7.5 sacks, career season. Oweh might revert back to his normal 3-4 sacks after getting big money.

8 mil a year yes, 16-18 mil a year, no way.
