My takeaway from the Crosby Failed trade-ready to spend!

They like Steele.

Cutting him is Jerry admitting a mistake.

We both know how that goes.
They don’t like Steele that much. They would cut him if they had the choice. I think they are waiting until after the draft and free agency. If they don’t have alternatives, they will keep him.

It’s weird that the Cowboys love to trade for big name players with existing contracts but are terrible at FA and doing contracts.
This FA class is fairly deep with goid solid players. Maybe not super stars but 3 or 4 goid solid players abd hitting on 2 studs in the draft can make a huge difference

I’d love to upgrade him but don’t see the option. He’s terrible pass blocker but a good run blocker. Replacing him near his cost isn’t gonna be easy

According to Chat Sports the Cowboys can create $12 million with an Osa restructure, $8.69 million with a Bland restructure, and $4.88 with a Jake Ferguson restructure. Cutting Malik Hooker adds $7 million.

Designating Terence Steele a post-June 1 cut frees $14 million. That pays for the draft class.

Now, here are the max savings for extending Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark- $15.5 million for Quinnen and $15.3 million for Clark.

The Cowboys are right up against the cap right now. If they make all the moves above, that's over $60 million of space, not even counting Steele until June.
Interesting my napkin math came out similar

See below

Pretty sure the number from the three Days will be $40m

We currently have $9m. Add the $40m for the DTs and we are at $49m. We already spent $8m on Javonte, which when included sets our max offseason spend at $57m

As a point of reference, last year the Cowboys spent $66m for 16 players. The lowest in the league.

  • $57m total available counting DT restructures and previous spend
  • Still need $15m in restructures and cuts (cut Anger, Steele, restructure Ferg and Bland)
    • Total then at $72m
      • $8m Javonte
      • $60m in JAGs with one “good” player
      • $4m draft class
Jerry claims free agent spending of $68m, beating 2025 and “busting the budget” by $4m

It’s crazy that the Cowboys burned nearly $68 million on bargain-bin players who barely moved the needle.

If I were the GM, I wouldn’t sign those types at all. I’d replace them with UDFAs, spend real cap money on true difference-makers, and use the draft to build depth. Right now, the team is paying for mediocrity instead of investing in impact. Our priorities are completely backwards.

I wouldn’t call it a failed trade. We made a bona fide offer and were disciplined with our maximum. Great strategy. On to the next one.

I think I may prefer Phillips or Oweh over Hendrickson, but we’ll see

not really, a 12 and 20 do not cost that much and without a second or third rd pick it probably will be around $10-12 million
not like we are talking a top 5 pick coupled with say a 14 pick
Yes and if they are currently at 8 million they are over the cap.

Sportrac had them at 15 million for draft picks. That’s where I got the number from

That $66m number actually sounds really high. I think the biggest contact they gave out was $6m. Removing minimum contracts I'm not sure if they've spent $66m in the last 5 years from a player AAV standpoint.

They should hire a pass-blocking specialist to work with him throughout the offseason. We hired a ton of assistant coaches, especially pass-rush specialists. I can’t see why we wouldn’t do the same with our O-line.

He’s always been really good run blocker, bad pass blocker. Not sure if it’s technique or what. I do think he gets his feet out sync a lot which effects leverage. Not sure coaching at this point in his career will help but sure can’t hurt

historically those numbers are high
you go by what happened last year for example
none of those teams had that much used in the draft pool as regards the cap
even the teams with 2 first rd picks

Well I would assume the cap going up has something to do with it possibly?

Restructuring Osa while extending Clark and Williams opens up around $30 million, more or less. Could also mess with Bland and Ferguson's deals to open some more money; and cut Hooker, Donovan Wilson, or both.
Dallas has not restructured Cee Dee yet

After tendering Aubrey and Bass we have zero cap space. Current draft class is projecting $12M.

So technically $12M in the hole.

What is Jerry's next step and what is he waiting for???

Are we keeping Osa, Clark and Williams???
You’re not locked in to tenders. They can be cut. No money is guaranteed unless they make the team. The Cowboys, as another poster has indicated many times, can sign any free agents they want to.

But there will be competition for the best ones. That’s how it works.

Same reason the cap goes up every year.
its not as high as some think but it rises every year as the cap does

Now the rookie salary cap has made big difference in that a top 5 pick pick will not automatically cripple you if he busts badly, a first overall QB bust like Jumongous Russell will no longer all but destroy a franchise for some years.

I think our rookie cap hit last year was around $9 million; I think I saw that number somewhere. Might be wrong, might not be that year. But those claiming its going to be like $17 million are off by a fair amount

The key is if they want to.

They apparently could not get Crosby. Pretty sure they wanted to.

Like that!! I think every position should have a capped number on it. TOP you can get for a QB is 40 million, LT top you can get is 30, EDGE 32million ya know! All this resetting the market, when will it be in the nfl that a player is making 100 million a year lol
“100 million a year”? Don’t know. But I know the owner that will offer it.

If they want to. They absolutely have to add talent to the defense. I don’t believe they were ever serious players for Crosby. Jerry did something he’s good at. Making something seem like he’s going to do it when he knows he has no intention of doing it.
