Cowboys fail the acid test again (Bust the budget)

If there was ever a way for Jerry and co to prove that this year was different, this was the perfect chance. They’ve already acquired Gary, now Crosby is back on the market, all that chatter about busting the budget, now is the time to put your money where your mouth is. And how do the cowboys respond ? “we are not expected to re-engage in trade talks for Maxx Crosby. Acquiring R. Gary and deciding that that takes you out of the running for Crosby is laughable at best.

I’m not going to close the door entirely on the Cowboys being out just yet. But if the latest reports are true, it’s just another offseason of the Cowboys not delivering.

I’ll take it a step further. I don’t think Dallas were ever seriously trying to sign Crosby at true market value. It feels more like they put out an offer they knew wouldn’t be competitive—just enough so fans could say they at least tried to land a difference-maker.
Once they were inevitably outbid, dumb & dumber could point to that and claim they made the effort. Then, instead of aggressively pivoting to someone like Hendrickson, as some reports suggested, they moved on to what was likely the plan all along: targeting cheaper, mid-tier players who are average to slightly above-average replacements rather than true impact free agents.

If Stephen doesn't hire a GM when Jerry kicks the bucket, then I'm just gonna retire from the NFL. I can outlive Jerry barring accident, I don't want to have to try and outlive Stephen, because even if I did I would be too old to really enjoy the Cowboys for very long.

It's not about market value. It's about draft compensation. The guy is under contract...extended just a year ago...so the contract was the contract unless the Cowboys wanted to re-do it once they had him. The offer was legit but their own team doctor (Daniel Cooper) saw the MRI scans of Crosby's knee. He was reportedly part of a group of doctors who evaluated the scans for the Ravens. Whatever they saw spooked the Ravens...and so they pulled the plug.

Hendrickson was probably never really in play...given the price and length of the contract desired by him. 25 - 30 mil/yr at least, on three to four years. Phillips and Hunter have really pushed up the market. 31 other teams obviously don't think Hendrickson is worth what he is asking.

Crosby not being a free agent means didly poo. Nobody cares how they bust the budget.

There’s a difference in busting the budget signing FA and busting your future budget and talent by trading picks. At 12 we can get a guy with good talent, relatively cheap compared to a FA and have him on a rookie deal for 4 years

I would think they had a very good reason to have cold feet. You arent making that trade and backing out without information showing you arent going to get what you are paying for. Especially an organization as astute as Baltimore

I think some of you drink urine every morning to start your day, just so you can start off with a loss so you can complain about it.

So far the Cowboys have made some decent moves. Here are the list of positive moves:

1. Reduce Steele’s contract
2. Reduce Hooker’s contract
3. Added a DT
4. Added a DE (from GB). This has flexibility with zero guaranteed money
5. Added a legit safety.
6. Added a no loss Sam Williams contract that he can be cut for a box of cracker jacks.
7. Haven’t given away any premium draft picks.
8. Added a second backup level, low risk safety.
9. Added a solid NT

The meat and potatoes of this draft will begin at around pick 20-about 65. There are multiple options available for linebacker, defensive end and safeties. There are also some solid DT options as well.

The salary cap has to be respected, and the cap cannot be looked at as a one year deal. You have to plan years ahead.

I really HOPE that Dallas trades down in this draft multiple times. Players like Allen, Golday, Anthony, and Rodrigues will be available with a late first round pick or in some cases much later Tarean York, and Kendal Daniels will be available later. We will probably need MULTIPLE linebackers out of this draft. But if we miss on one that’s a position that we should be able to add cheaply in the second wave of free agency after the draft, if we need additional depth.

I think you will also see the Cowboys look at add at least one solid DE/EDGE/OLB and one legit DT out of this class.

I would prefer multiple trade backs and really stock the cupboard with as many picks as we can get even if our first pick is around pick 35. This is the way to go in this draft.

Multiple players may this team much better faster than two studs like Styles and Downs even if they were available.

How many picks do we have after pick 20?

This team isn't trading back. They hoard draft picks on draft day. Especially high ones.

Gary's contract is not guaranteed. He can be released for the embarrassment of losing a 4th.

We can still make the same offer and now ask for a 2027 4th in return from the Raiders, to recoup our wasted 4th on Gary.

Crosby isn't going to fetch 2 premium picks now after failing his physical. The real question is can Oakland afford to keep him. They just spent a whole bunch of money on free agents assuming they wouldnt be paying him. They might release him. He doesn't want to be there.
