TRADED Osa traded to 49ers for 3rd rd pick

Exactly right. When you go into a draft with such glaring needs, it makes it easier for other teams to know they have to jump in front of you if they want a player.. We are so thin at DE and CB that any team looking for those positions behind us knows they need to jump in front of us. If we had a more balanced roster, it makes guessing what we might do harder.
But we are also thin at CB and now DT lol.

Ok then just play him as a 3T.

Doesn't matter what the scheme is, every defense needs players who can do that. 1T, 3T, 5T - doesn't matter the alignment. You have to have penetrating players.
Quinnen is the 3T now. Osa didn't want to have to play 4i on the other side and then backup to Quinnen the rest of the time.

OSA is not good depth in this scheme. When he isn't a true 3 tech shooting a single gap, he is often engulfed by bigger blockers and almost always wiped by double teams. Technically, he is a DE in this scheme, but the 5 man line requires big DE's. Osa cannot play NT. The DE has to shoot the gap between the guard and tackle, but he is also responsible for helping the gap beside his, so taking on a block and sliding a bit if the play is in 1 gap over.

Osa's only real value would be in all-out pass rush, so he could come in on third downs, but he is paid starter's money. He is no longer a starter. Even in a 4-3, last year the starters were Williams and Clark who are bigger and better than Osa. He ended up only playing 40% of the defensive snaps. Bottom line....he is overpaid as a back-up rotational guy. So they signed another big body guy who can also stretch outside (he played out on the OT's against us last year), and they will most likely draft another player.

Winfrey, Osa, and even Solomon Thomas were all released or traded because they don't fit the scheme. Trust the defensive coaches. With all the leverage Jerry has given the coaches this offseason, there's no way he is making these moves, especially the Osa move, without the coaches telling him they can't use these guys.
Well said.

Ogboner at 3 mil is a much better player than Osa at 20 mil. It's not remotely close. And then add in that Ogboner is a solid run stopping DT who can play NT. Just because a player provides a bit of a pass rush does not mean he is a better player than the run stopping type DT.

Can't, he is very weak vs the run.

I don't really care what he wanted.

He wouldn't be a backup in nickel - which they're still going to be in more than half the time.

I am shocked they got a 3rd for him. But now they need depth at DT unless they think Jay Toia is going to make a big improvement in 2026.

Honestly, I have no idea why they bothered to sign him last year. I would have paid a few dollars more for Milton Williams.

Osa proceeds to get 12 sacks….
Is the plan to get bigger at defensive tackle in the draft, because there are no players to choose from in free agency now. I have no doubt that Christian Parker has a plan, right now it appears Dallas will draft one or maybe two of these young defensive tackles in the draft. The 2nd round has some good-looking replacements with Caleb Banks and Lee Hunter. If Dallas wants to pick one in the 1st round, the choices are Kayden McDonald and Peter Woods. I am convinced that Dallas wants to simply get bigger and better at defensive tackle. What are your thoughts on this Aven8.

You do know Skip is a moron that just likes to stir the pot to make money from you right?
He does kind of have a point though. Why not make this trade earlier? Maybe SF was just now ready to pull the trigger. Or maybe the Jonses messed up. Both are plausible to me.

There are two DTs in the nickel. Either Odighizuwa, Clark, or Quinnen has to sit in those situations. (Somebody has to play NT) Then if they want to move a bigger edge inside then there are two of the three sitting. Osa didn't want to do that.

You can assume that all you want. DTs rotate. QW played <70% of snaps last year, and Clark is not a passrusher so he's the obvious player to come out in nickel. The NT (1 tech) vs. 3 tech distinction is meaningless in most nickel packages and passrush situations. You're not asking either player to eat a double team or two gap.

It's not like Osa would have played less.

glad he’s gone. should’ve never extended him last year. people complained about this defense don’t be mad now when these players who were bad are let go. more will be let go next year as well it’s a process.

love me a 3 round pick btw
