What is the Cowboys reasoning for delaying contract signings?

We all know, we've all heard it year after year. Deadlines make deals blah blah blah.
With the renewed coaching staff and how that has all come to play. I think we all felt Jerry was finally seeing his mortality - he isn't.
We thought OK, the Micah stuff went sideways by Jerry playing games, he won't do that again ! How wrong we were.
He can't help himself, as soon as they (the Jones's) can be in the narrative, its a moth to a flame...
I have recently seen where sports people were saying that most of the agents hate dealing with the Jones's. So, my assumption would be, why would they make deals ? In the case of Pickens agent, tell that guy who is supposedly one of the most powerful agents (micah's) in pro- football and after all Jerries I don't know him bull----, doesn't want to stick to Jerry.
Look, it's not all on the Cowboys for sure. But our belief that Jerry has changed, is doing things differently is still only to a point.
I love the Cowboys, but even this off-season shows no urgency to accomplish what they need to before and during the draft.
As long as Jerry/Stephen run this team the Jerry way - they can't and won't compete for a championship !

Well written good post, I was hoping this new coaching staff would change some things for the better and new blood would bring excitement and newfound optimism within the team. I am still holding out hope but some of Ol Jerry's bad habits are still lingering and bring back some not so good memories. Ol Jerry's waiting around instead of pressing the issue on Pickens yearly numbers feels like business as usual. I feel Dallas needs to be proactive and sign the player long term if feasible or trade him for high draft capital that can help this team this season.

Especially considering that while Diggs was garnering 11 picks, he was also giving up the most yards in the NFL.
Diggs was allergic to making tackles, in his last couple of seasons here. He looked like he was afraid to make a tackle he might have been injured, or it might have been he got paid and didn't care anymore. I knew when he got picked up by Green Bay that if his tackling didn't improve, he would not have been there long and he wasn't.

Ol Jerry won't talk to the agent there lies the main deal killing problem, pure incompetence from GM genius himself. You have to communicate with the agent, get a number per year and sign him or trade him based on those numbers. We need a competent leader, and we don't have it here.
From 1989 to now, it’s hard to believe Jerry has never spoken to an agent. Sometimes, when he’s busy with numerous contracts, he delegates the task to his legal team, which is just smart business. The Parsons situation is being misunderstood—just because he didn’t want to deal with David, the agent, doesn’t mean he avoids all agents. He’s handled thousands of contracts in football and other businesses, and with 1,200 employees and a billionaire’s résumé, he’s met plenty of agents in person. Using one isolated incident where he didn’t like an agent’s attitude to claim he never talks to agents is misleading; he probably interacts directly with about 75% of them. And not every contract requires an in-person meeting—Zoom, FaceTime, email, or phone calls work until the final details need to be signed off. The Parsons matter was just a one-off where Jerry didn’t like David’s response, not a reflection of how he handles all negotiations.

Let’s remember you don’t always need to handle contracts in person—you can negotiate over Zoom, FaceTime, email, or phone calls. You don’t have to meet with agents until it’s time to cross every T and dot every I, when things get serious.

He definitely meets with agents, but they’ve already gone through all this before, especially when discussing the Parsons situation.

That was a one-off where he didn’t like the response from David, who basically said not to bother sending something over because it would just be torn up unless they talked first.

Jerry might have embellished the exchange, but when David showed attitude, Jerry simply said “OK, never mind” and walked away.

This is a guy who talks to hundreds of agents, yet somehow one rare incident has people convinced he avoids them altogether.

If you believe that, I’ve also got the Brooklyn Bridge for sale—just send me the money and I’ll get you the paperwork. LMAO.

Why would any Agent allow his client to accept less $$$

Not happening.

Big and little think it makes them look smart. Like they got the best deal. And by getting it done last minute like they are these shrew negotiators. Plus it keeps the Cowboys in the news every day they wait.
I think there’s also a financial element. They have to write the signing bonus check the moment the contract is signed.

Not justifying this if that’s the case, but there’s a huge difference between asset value and cash flow. But the weird thing is the cash hit is the same, if not worst, by waiting. There may be some relationship to when they get tv or season ticket monies (receive in May).

Basically, if you don't see Thompson/Durant/PJ as upgrades in the secondary, then you weren't paying attention or something last season. Our DBs were absolutely terrible, and it had nothing to do w/ scheme or anything else. They were just bad.

Cheap is the team with the highest paid kicker, highest paid an, top paid war, possibly two top 4 paid wrs? That’s cheap? Both day and lambs agents wanted to wait, because it gives them the power.
We have a school district locally that just went on strike and teachers are picketing. Some moron asked, why go on strike now, why not strike during the summer.

And there you have it. They don’t wait till the last minute….. agents of certain players wait till the last minute. Did we drag out Williams? How about osa? How about Diggs? How about Steele? How about bland? You all seem to conveniently forget about the 95% of players that do deals with no issues. It takes two to dance.

And you think the cowboys have cash flow problems? Bahahahahahahahana

And that's not even considering understanding who to pay and who not to pay. Many of us wanted to keep Lewis and didn't think Diggs was worth it.
And many said signing a broken down Williams last year was stupid. Denver didn’t want him so he is clearly washed. Many said cooper rush should be starting over Dak. Damn, if only our fans were running things.

1. Stay in the news
2. Want to piss off the player so they have an excuse when they/future potential players turn down playing here, and Dumb and Dumber Jr can say they "considered" them but in the end..........
They are in the news. Why can’t you all understand this. Jerry need to do nothing at all and they still are the main topic all off season. Hell, the Seahawks won the sub and it’s like they are some European soccer team.

I loved the JW signing. I remember arguing w/ people over him, and they were all wrong. Of course, everything was predicated on him gettin getting his burst back.

I don't think I've ever seen so much of a fan base fall for a bad QB.

I coached for 20 years, and I was very aggressive. I always knew it didn’t matter what I did, people would complain. That happens on steroids with this team.

Yup. My coaching experience was only slow pitch softball, but same thing, people are going to complain no matter what.

Not problems, but possibly a timing problem.

I don’t have any idea the timing of their revenue. But they certainly have fixed costs that don’t vary and variable cost that do. Again, what something is worth if sold is not the same as earnings or cash flow.

It’s also possible not to be an actual problem, but an operating methodology instilled early in Jones’ life. His parents owned a grocery store in his formative years. Grocery stores are a thin margin business and managing cash flow is paramount for survival.

I literally just said this, so why are you grouping me into "all", and not understanding my first point?

Your number 1 thing on your list was to stay in the news, was it mistaken on what you were saying?

Hmmm what does that remind me of

So the agent owns the player? If the player wants to take less, he can and the agent can’t do anything about it. And it’s happened before. Didn’t Brady and Mahomes take less? Did their agents force them to take more?

Read the highlighted part, and then explain to me the Dak contract.......This is the second time Jerry gave Dak what he wanted. Where did our QB and his agent compromise? Unless I'm missing something, he got everything he wanted LOL

That’s one of the most ridiculous and delusional takes I keep seeing. You don’t just give the player whatever he wants—that’s not how you run a $15 billion business. This is about the agent and player negotiating with the team.
^This^. What is surprising to me is how many apologists there are for a sports franchise that has found limited success in 3 decades.

It's not like we are following a non-profit organization or trying to solve world hunger here.

This is about putting together a consistent organization that is focused on learnig to get better in order to win a SuperBowl.

You say Dak, I say Derrick Henry. There are numerous examples of head scratching behaviour out of this front office. The front office with the most monetary resources, best facilities and supposedly the player talent whisperer named Will McClay.

Bob Haze posted almost two years to this day a listing of the oldest GMs in the league. Jerry is by far the oldest. Balke and Loomis are on the list, but it feels like this Cowboys front office is one of the oldest with very little new blood coming in at the top.

So even though the ideas are fresh coming from below the older decision makers may prove to be the barrier to change. There are multiple research studies done on how this mgmt structure turns into a paradox and a actual barrier to improvement.

At the end of the day the research shows in all humans that you cannot expect more form the perosn than what they are capable of. Hence the need for churn. This applies tot he roster and it also applies to the front office.
