105.3 the fan: Do teams really want Pickens?

I don't have the final answer and am not arrogant to pretend I do but since I remembered it different I did try and refresh my memory.

So far we don't have a ton of evidence but what we do have is your memory of glancing at a friends phone almost a year ago, my memory of not hearing anything about that, and an article published in the Sporting News reporting on an article published by the Athletic.

Your memory
My memory
The writings of professional sports reporters.

I'm probably just not fanning right, though.
Wow, 1 article which is an opinion.

"Word leaked during the draft that Pickens was available if anyone wanted him. Some teams polled by The Athletic at the time laughed at the idea of inviting Pickens into their locker room for any price, let alone a second-day draft pick. There wasn’t a lot of interest in talking with the Steelers about a trade."

Yes, like I said, we don't have much evidence. The most tangible piece of evidence we do have is from an organization that forms researched based opinions professionally.

Not sure your "I heard it from a friend" argument merits much consideration against that.

That you believe the Steelers turned down better offers out of respect to an unwanted and disgruntled Pickens is way out there. Makes perfect sense. lol

Never said hand him "anything he wants."
So, you really think he's going to sign a long term contract that doesn't have upfront monies, guaranteed monies greater than the tag, that the cap hit escalates, etc., which all give him the security to do what he wishes with limited recourse available to the team?
You don't have to do anything.
I agree. The team, for once, holds the cards and doesn't seem to be giving them away. The team is letting market conditions set his value & if that means we pay the tag dollars, it's a known value for a limited period of time. This is a huge advantage to the team. Leaves the onus on the player to work for a longer deal whether with us or another team.

I think he would sign for 3 yrs at $38-$40m. That's not giving him everything he wants lol.

No, I mean you don't have to pay two WRs or choose not to. To your point, they are letting market conditions set his value because they are being cheap and stupid.

Dallas isn’t really sure what they have in Pickens. So 1 yr franchise tag it is. He’s better than a 1st round pick but 5x more expensive right now. My rule of thumb is if you can buy a player or draft pick then do it.

I think most teams would rather draft a WR in the first. I could see a a team offering 5yr 100m with 50 guaranteed. It’s the draft picks stopping that deal. I’d look for Pickens to play on the tag and play it safe to avoid injury. Next year he’ll get a big payday.

Personally I don’t like the way Dallas does that to players. If I’m Pickens I don’t set foot on the field until the fines start. Then I play to not get hurt. Holding out doesn’t really work the team will just pressure the guy to sign for less. The PA should try to get rid of the franchise tag it does nothing but rake the player over the coals and end up not liking the team. I figure if you guarantee the tag amount for the next 2 yrs that will do away with the tag and that’s fair for the player.

we are over paying. It is not that Pickens is not a talented wr. It is that he can go off the rails. We have seen it in Pittsburgh and have seen signs of it here too. No team is going to gamble on a high dollar long term contract on him because of that.

5 yr 100 million ???
So 20 million a year ?
8 million under franchise tag and lower salary than most of the top wr’s ? Even the guarantee is laughable - that’s less than the money he would make in the franchise tag the next two years —-
Umm I think it’s more than the draft picks that would stop that deal
I don’t think Pickens or his Agent would even entertain an insane Pennie’s on the dollar deal such as that - plus 5 years ??
lol

Fined for his penalties, 2 or 3 times. Like other NFL players get.
Otherwise there was no word on anything else. Archer could be reaching, like fans.

From what I’ve read he was also fined for being late to team meetings. But the guy produces in games which is what really matters. And at $29 mil he’s a bargain and better than any WR in the draft.

I don't get the stuff about issues with him.
He did some things on the field with Pittsburgh that caused them penalties, etc...
But, that may have also been caused by other issues.

At least he didn't screw up royally off the field like a lot of past Dallas players lol.

Dude makes some awesome catches... and we know Dak needs him and CeeDee...
Or we will be doing what we usually do, flip sides on who costs us games. The Defense or the Offense.
All of a sudden Pickens is gone... offense cost us games and defense will be good.
Never fails in Dallas. We never get both sides of the ball to at least be good.

He can never be fined if he doesn’t sign the tag. If he doesn’t play he doesn’t get paid. That’s his downside. He’ll sign the tag when he feels like it and at that point he’s “signed”. Once he does sign it he’s guaranteed $27.298 million for the season, in 18 weekly payments.

After July 15 he can’t sign a deal with the Cowboys or any team. And after that date when he does sign the tag he can’t be traded. He’s playing on the tag this season. I suspect he knows it, too.

I can help. The issues are that he wants top dollar. Paying him top dollar means you're going to be short elsewhere, and if he starts the off field shenanigans again, it could cost you several seasons. That is the stuff about possible issues.

No, what really matters is if you want top dollar, then you must be the guy who leads and sets examples, not the guy who's late to team meetings.

Huh? Honestly, where do you get this stuff from? If they didn't have to pay two 1sts, Pickens would've already had an offer from another team in the 30+ mil/season range. 20 mil is for WRs that aren't top 20.

We can't do that, don't have the room.

Pickens needs a 5 or 6 year deal so the next 2-3 seasons he'll be cheap. Only way to do it.

Who says he wants top dollar, just some fans?
I have not herd this from Pickens, or even the stupid mediots. All speculation.

Is there any proof of this as well? Other than the media possibly making it up. And fans want to roll with it because some do not like him.

No it can't because it is a needlessly excessive cap hit.
It’s not in the cap hit. It’s in the accounting. The cap hit under the tag for this year would be higher but no dead money later. Less dollars is less dollars.

Well we don’t know for sure but the fact that he hasn’t already signed is a pretty solid indicator of what direction the wind is blowing.

There is no hurry for him to sign it yet.
We will see if he does before OTA’s or mini camps. Then go from there.
