Cowboys have called to inquire about LB Brooks

Anyone familiar with his game? I saw a few Dolphins games and never saw him flash to the point he was an all pro. How many of you guys want him just so you can say we have a all pro at linebacker?

He's really good at getting through the gap and sorting through the blockers to get into the backfield, whether a run's inside or out. A very solid tackler, he often stops RBs in their tracks and brings them down immediately.

Some question his coverage skills, and I haven't seen enough to know, but what I saw didn't look bad. There's a reason he's made so many solo tackles, though. He's good at getting to the ball carrier and bringing him down.

I think it will be higher than that. Quay Walker, who wasn't nearly as good, got three years, $40.5 million. He may legitimately be looking for three years, $45 million as he's better than any linebacker that was in this free agent class.

I think if we get him that we ride it out to see how he does while we've got him for "cheap" ($8 million). Then, if we get Pickens signed to a long-term deal before the start of free agency next year, we tag Brooks. That doesn't mean we can't work out a deal next year. It just gives us more time with the July 15 deadline.

He doesn't have to a be a one-year rental. I agree that the tag is high, but it would just be a placeholder. At that cost, there would be some urgency to work out a deal.

Frankly, I'm in favor of waiting on a deal because you never know how a player is going to work out. Maybe try to come to an agreement in-season if it looks like he's going to be everything we hope he'd be.

I watch the Dolphins when Dallas isn't on, most of the time.
Admittedly this past season I checked out early on the Phins, so I maybe caught ~8 games.
He's good against the run, and alright in coverage. Can't say he was prime Warner/Wagner/Kuechly but he played well from start to finish.

Tackling machine, seemingly always around the ball. Dolphins offense with Tua was ***, so probably was on the field quite a bit more than average-if I had to guess.

Dolphins for some reason regressed the ~1st half defensively under 2nd year coach Weaver, but then turned it around. Dunno if it was just correcting players from free lancing or what, but to start the year they were Cowboys bad in terms of everything.

Except the reality is Pickens has not garnered the Cowboys anything in trade. Zilch. Maybe they’ll get a compensatory pick for him, someday.

Can't say I've watched him, but I've tried to find clips since our interest in him emerged. Your description is what I saw.

Agree that he's not future Hall-of-Famer quality. He's Pro Bowl quality (deserving ... not just by reputation) because he finds the ball and makes the tackle. Nothing fancy about that, just something you need to have a good defense.

Yes, Really! Take a step back and stop being stubborn and arguing the comment/idea wasn't dumb and think about it for a second. The internet is full of people more interested in arguing that they weren't wrong about what they said in the past than thinking about it rationally and admitting they were probably wrong.

They might get a 3rd if he leaves via free agency but at a minimum get a 4th. They save only like $2.6M by trading him before 6/1, but if they wait, they don't get to make that draft pick until the next year. He was an All Pro just last year who led the NFL with 183 tackles and also has seasons of 184 and 161 tackles in the past. As a comparison, our leading tackler had 91 tackles and the years before that had 138, 109, 101 and 101. He is only 28 and could end up being resigned if he stays all year. Why would they trade him for a 5th? Why? From our perspective, he is a huge bargain for Dallas at his 2026 cap hit and we might even extend him if we trade for him or at a minimum can sign him before he becomes a free agent if we don't also draft an ILBer this year. Most important we have no one to play that spot. No one. Our run defense has been horrendous. This flat out a huge, perfect fit for us. This also allows us to go BPA in the draft and not have to force ILBer and make no mistake about it we need a starting ILBer.

And I think we end up with one of them. The only problem for me is that means we can't use that pick to address another defensive need. If we could get Brooks for a third or third and fifth, then we can use those first-rounders on a CB, DT, DE or even a S.

It appears to me that both Overshown (when healthy) and Brooks are really good at exploding to the ball. I think once they see the play and attack it that it is hard for offensive linemen to get their hands on them.

Your comment, for instance, is dumb. I'm not arguing what fair value for the player is as it is open for interpretation. The opinion I was disputing about a 5th rounder was indeed dumb and baseless as is your comment. Unlike those saying he can be had for a 5th or in some cases much less! I laid out a bunch of facts that explain why it's off base. And I hate to tell you but opinions can absolutely be wrong. In the Jerry Jones era, tagging a player has not once resulted in the player capitulating for a less than market value contract, and the last thing you want is a 28M tag number averaged into a contract of an ILB. The top of that position make 18-20M.

I’m factoring in age depreciation. Walker (and Nakibe Dean) are 25 years old, while Brooks is 28.
