The Cowboys Next Move Feels Like a George Pickens Extension

Has there been any rumors on what GP/DM even want out of a deal?
Top 5? More than CDL?
Short term, or 5+ years?

Cap wise they can manage both CDL and GP for 2+ years with hits under their AAV.

Sure, I get the concern over his mental jusgement back in Pitt but I can't see how any player really plays on the tag these days. It's going to be a hold in-fake back pain, disruptions etc...

What used to be a key for the owners side in the tag has slowly become even with players holding in.

I’m not understanding what the point of a holdout would even be. After July 15 the tag is locked in for the year so trade or not Pickens would be playing on the tag.

We are in win right now mode. Not next year, not the next. We have a few more solid years of dak... after that, who knows where we will be. You get pickens done now. You know what you have with him. Trade him and draft a WR, and you are HOPING it works out.
For sure. Load up now for a ~3 year window and plan for all your dead money to hit in 2030 or so when you're going to be rebuilding anyways..

Nope. As always. This FO waited too long.
Did they? Y'all would've been complaining if we signed hime before CD got injured. How the f were they supposed to know he'd have been so productive?

Also, do you think player agents advise their players to take team friendy deals when their stock is down? This is a business, and yeah the Tweedle D and Tweedle Dumb aren't the best, but business doesn't happen in Cowboys vacuum. I wish it did.

We don’t know what they would or wouldn’t do; they have the right to take any compensation they choose. If a team was truly interested, they could have contacted the Cowboys, and it would’ve been newsworthy, but they didn’t.
I agree with the first sentence, not necessarily the second.

IMO, Stephen was disingenuous with his comment. A team wouldn’t likely reach out to the Cowboys until they have a good idea of Pickens asking price. His asking price would likely influence their compensation offer and no team wants to show their hand on what they might be willing to offer before knowing the money.

If it’s true the Cowboys haven’t received any calls, it’s more likely Pickens asking price is too high in April or there is no sense of urgency as the deadline is 3 months away. I highly doubt Mulugheta hasn’t been working the phones.

Our FO manages this team like it’s an oil company where “winning” is profit. Owning a sports team means winning is being a champion first. Making money will happen anyway.

They are going to make tons of money win or lose. Why not seriously try to win a championship instead of low balling everything? If we ever start winning playoff games again, they could make even more money than already do.
Because there is a limited pot, unlike in the 60s,70s, and 80s. Your argument would have merit if there were no cap.

Because teams aren't going to give up two firsts.
That’s not the point, you’re glossing over the fact that they could offer less. Just because the Cowboys turned it down doesn’t mean they shouldn’t make an offer; maybe the Cowboys would take less. No offers at all, zero.

Yes, the Cowboys have the right to demand two first-round picks, but that doesn’t mean you can’t propose something else.

Do I really have to keep repeating this? We’re going in circles. I’m saying if teams were truly interested in him and thought he was the king of all wide receivers, they would have made some kind of offer, just like with AJ Brown, who’s been on the market for a while and might be headed to New England. The rumors have been swirling. It doesn’t mean he’ll be traded, but at least we know there are teams showing interest.

No, he’s not on the tag, but that doesn’t matter. Even if he were on the tag, unsigned, or required two first-round picks to make a deal, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t offer something else to the Cowboys and see if they take it.

The Cowboys have the right to accept any offer, even for less compensation, if they want to. So why not test it? If they wanted George badly enough, they would’ve made some kind of offer. This is the Dallas Cowboy, no story, rumor, or even a made-up scenario has mentioned a single offer or interest from any team. That’s odd and telling. Again, teams can offer anything for him, and the Cowboys have the right to refuse unless it’s two first-round picks. See the difference?

Why not bring it to the Dallas Cowboys just to see if they'll bite? I can tell you why because that's how little the market and the interest is as we speak, it might change but right now George has no suitors of any kind, not even low ballers, that could have come to Jerry and said hey how about one first or how about a 1st and a 2nd or 1st and a 3rd?

That is my point there isn't a single offer at all And again maybe that'll change soon, but I find that very telling of his market, which right now he doesn't have one, because the Cowboys might take a first and again that could change during the draft ,

what if they are considering that and they pick a receiver in the first round? And then turn around and trade Pickens anyway?

The 2nd part of your post is very valid, as it takes both sides and the agent would have been foolish to sign with his client at a low point. The cowboys still probably needed to offer at least $30m per year to get any real interest from Pickens.

Pickens certainly over achieved a bit last year due to the perfect circumstances of a team with no defense and a monster offense, but there was no doubt about his talent level. His 2024 and 2023 numbers suggest he was always capable of what he did last season.

well..... there it is. Pickens has not a single suitor, so Dallas has 100% of the leverage. You offer him a 4 year deal worth 80 million or you tell him to play on the tag and thats that. Glad you covered this for all us dummies.

Because Pickens isn't going to sign for less.

Sure, a team could offer some lowball contract, but Pickens isn't going to sign it lol

I don't really care what you keep repeating, you are wrong.

Even if I wanted to get the Pickens deal done Id wait until after the 1st round.

Why not keep WR as a possibility on your board? Id rather not telegraph my intentions is all.

Fwiw I absolutely do want Pickens re-signed.

I probably would have just signed Pickens already but there is a lot of value to having him unsigned if a WR (like Tyson) falls to 12.

Probably a minimal change, but it gives the appearance that Dallas might draft that player, and encourage a team that needs a WR to try to move up.

I don’t think they will either but if they truly don’t have a market for him then then yeah I do see him 12 million less. 12 million less won’t get a deal done though IMo. I thought he did enough to rehabilitate his image but maybe he hasn’t.
If there is no market why pay him big, he has to take less. No market means less money. But GP has a market we not dumb thinking no one called Stephan about GP.

But until GP signs his tender we cant do anything

I’m don’t believe anyone offered more than a 2nd or 3rd for him.

That’s because Pickens was given the “non-exclusive” tag which allowed teams to negotiate with Pickens but if they signed him it would have cost the new team two #1 draft picks. No team would do that.
But there’s nothing that says it has to be (2) 1sts or nothing. The Cowboys can tell Pickens’ agent they’re open to all reasonable offers and let the agent plow the field. The Cowboys could even tell him their minimum accepted trade value.

If the Cowboys are saying the FT (2) 1sts is the minimum, they need to have their heads examined. That would be why Cap Boy isn’t getting any calls. A 2nd this year and a 1st next year would be coup if they could get that. Heck, a 2nd this year and next year wouldn’t be bad if they’re projected to be top 1/2 of the 2nd.

Mugaletta's clients don't play on tags. So, if we don't sign him or trade him, it's possible we don't see him until week 10.
And how many teams will be rushing to sign a player that sat out that long? I think the Cowboys have all the leverage and perhaps Pickens best option is to play on the tag, be a good team player and have another monster season and then perhaps other teams will have interest and we can get back some valuable draft assets.
