Tagging him is their leverage. The agent is probably asking for top end market value, and the counter is the tag.

They're not going to trade Pickens. They don't need to draft a WR. They can tag Pickens again next year. It's still cheaper than a long term deal. The cap hit doesn't matter to them.

Sure, it is for one year coz most players/agents accepts it as part of neg or determining players value. But a 2nd tag, not so much........of course teams can use it but its rare player end up playing on it ( 2nd time). In fact, Cousins is the last player I can think of to play on a 2nd tag......

I really do wish that the Joneses were intelligent enough to do this as a way to blow smoke. To make a big story before the draft making a big deal about how we could be going after a wide receiver at 12. All to make them sound less desperate if they need to move up for a top defender or even if it makes it more likely that somebody else would go after Jordan Tyson, pushing a defensive player down.

Stirring up this drama on the eve of the draft to try to misdirect other teams from what they really want is not a bad plan.

But I’ve watched Jerry and Stephen long enough to know that that’s not the case. And this is just buffoonery.

He’s a “POS agent” because he’s trying to get his client a deal that is appropriate? If the Cowboys are not comfortable with how the non-exclusive franchise tag works they shouldn’t utilize it.

They’re traded for Pickens. He didn’t ask to come to the Cowboys. He played a season for them. He played out his contract. And Dallas is “yeah, we’re not going to negotiate with him”.

The Cowboys are not a very good team. Perhaps if they’d have proven themselves to Pickens he’d grant more amenable contract terms.
