Drafted by Cowboys No. 137 pick - Alabama Edge Rusher LT Overton

Never was enamored with him at Bama.

No defined position and a marginal athlete. He’ll likely be a rotational guy at best. Folks can get upset but that’s just reality.

If he played at Waxahatchie State instead of Bama everyone would be saying “who/why’d we draft this guy,” but because he played at Bama folks are intrigued.

Think Solomon Thomas but lesser of an athlete.
Thomas wasn’t a real good fit as a 3-4 end. He’s at his best as a 3-tech in a 4-3. Our hope seems to be that Overton is the opposite of Thomas, stout against the run with some ability to pass rusher in going against guards. I do think comparisons to Chauncey Golston are probably fair. We drafted Golston knowing we were going to ask him to beef up and help on the inside. He’s at his ended up playing some base end, especially when Lawrence was out, and some 3-tech. I thought he was better at base end, though.

Bro, Thomas has played in both a 43 and 34. He’s now on his fifth team and still hasn’t found a longterm fit.

Yikes….just sayin

When fans are watching players getting ready for the draft, we almost always look at DE’s through a pass rush prism. We want to see explosiveness and sacks. If we don’t see much of that from a prospect, we say “meh” and move on. And Overton definitely isn’t a twitchy, explosive rusher at all.

However, big, physical guys like this guy are players that coaches need and like to have, particularly in a defense like Parker will run.

Overton is tough, plays mean and is extremely physical. He’s a tone setter up front and is strong as a bull. You can’t expect much sack production from him… that will be other guy’s job. But he will make life difficult on his opponent. He plays with a huge amount of effort and plays to the whistle.

I actually really like adding him to this defensive front. He can be used in several different ways and will offer a ton of different things that Parker can do with him.

He will be used as a 5T or 4i a lot and he will have an edge outside of him like Eze, Barham, or Lawrence who will be the twitchy edge rusher.

Overton will just be inside, making things difficult on the OL. Defenses need guys like this, and defenses need attitude and demeanors like this.

But if you’re looking for a pass rusher from this guy just because he had DE before his name, you’ll be disappointed.
