History says Cowboys will open on the road

The Dallas Cowboys are due a home opener. If you are thinking that it has been a minute since the Cowboys last began a season at home then you are correct in your assumption.

Do you know how long it has been since they have done so?

The Cowboys have opened on the road in each of the past three seasons, so it goes without saying that they are indeed due to open at home. Consider that the last time they opened at home was a loss so the last time they began a season in their own building and won was all the way back in 2019.

Historical trends tend to show up sometimes in the annual schedule release, but the league is constantly evolving so it is difficult to fully bank on them. Consider that the 2019 season-opening win was the last time that Dallas began a season at AT&T Stadium against the New York Giants for example, and once upon a time that was basically a tradition.

Could this be the year that the Cowboys get a chance to open up back in their home building? Time will tell, but history says you shouldn’t count on it.

Before the Cowboys begun playing at AT&T
Stadium in 2009 it was very normal for Dallas to play their first couple games on the road to avoid the blustery heat at Texas Stadium in September as the heat factor could be over a 100 degrees.

I can tell you having season tickets for most of those 37 years it could be brutal up until October. We usually gave away our preseason tickets to friends, family or clients. August was totally unbearable.

I don’t recall many season openers back in the day at home. I do recall sweating my butt off in those September games. It was survival of the fittest.

But that begun a tradition of the Cowboys opening the season on the road . And while it seems we have opened more often at home since moving inside it’s still the norm to open on the road.

Besides a 5 year stretch from 2013-2017 home openers we have only opened at home two other times since moving. 2019, 2022.

This is like walking up to a roulette wheel, seeing that the last five results were red, then figuring black is due.

History couldn’t have much to do with it. Although it would be nice to not have to play that Thursday opener at SB champs yet again. People are watching that game anyway. Not sure why they play their ratings ace on the Cowboys in week one.

We had a history years ago opening with NY. I’d certainly welcome that now. I’m hoping for an easier opening schedule for this defense to gain some confidence and offense momentum instead of more serious contenders.

But we rarely close out the season at home. And many times the last 2 or 2 of 3 on the road.

We will close out at Philly, NYG or Washington. And another late December game will be against one of those teams as will.
We will also play at GB in December.
