The NCAA is investigating Sorsby's gambling, according to sources, as the organization forbids athletes from betting on both college and pro sports.

According to sources, Sorsby bet on Indiana football while redshirting for the Hoosiers as a true freshman in 2022, a season in which he played in a single game as a reserve. The bets in 2022, according to sources, were on Indiana to win and none came in a game in which Sorsby appeared.

Well, will be interesting to see this play out.

PFF had projected him as a Top 10 pick in next year's draft.

Something tells me that, if he's entering rehab, that one game in 2022 was not the extent of his gambling.

Sorsby transferred at least $60,000 to two friends to cover bets made on his behalf, per the documents.

While Sorsby was enrolled at Indiana from June 2022 to December 2023, he acknowledged making at least 2,900 bets that totaled more than $30,000.

Between Sept. 2, 2022, and Oct. 22, 2022, Sorsby made at least 40 wagers on Indiana football and/or individual members of the team. According to the documents, the bets ranged from $1 to $114 and totaled at least $850.

He may be cooked

Image of Gentlemen, this bill will be a giant step forward in the treatment of the insane gambler

This is an interesting case to watch.
The NCAA is basically suspending him for life over bets placed as a redshirt freshman at Indiana. --He has bet plenty since then but the lifetime ban is for his 2022 bets.
The rules and bylaws around betting have changed since then.

You may recall Calvin Ridley got 2 years from the NFL with yearly reinstatement requests available.

Thus, the issue with the NCAA is that instead of mirroring NFL policies they are always overly draconian until courts slap them down.

Sorsby is a Senior and probably should be done. But the NCAA's terrible oversight and management keep this alive until the Judge rules. This is expected in the next 7 to 10 days.
This is similar to what kept Trin Chambliss alive at Ole Miss.

You also of course have the NCAA profiting off selling their data to betting companies via 3rd parties.
And virtually every think piece media article is on a site with betting advertisement.

What I'd personally like to see is the NCAA to work out a deal with Sorsby to drop his legal challenge. Give him 6 games suspension but allow his career to go forward and force Texas Tech to decide if it is worth the hassle at that point to pay him for the second half of a season.
In the meantime adopt NFL gambling policies and send each D1 school a copy with the ask to have their players sign in.

Which movies did the star NFL QB lose his career to gambling? LOL Seems like there were a few.

Going to happen here real soon.

Insane.
It's now allowed for players to gamble, even on their own team in the NCAA.
Just claim by being ineligible, based off your own actions, its going to hurt your bottom line.

Can players now be not suspended for DV? If you suspended my client for whooping his pregnant girlfriend it will cause great harm to his paycheck.

Plus, it's an addiction, and taking him away from his sport will hurt his recovery.

I didn’t read the decision to see the logic but I think the Court of Appeals reverses this.

Legal gambling has run amok. Just watch ANY game and you will be inundated with gambling commercials and in game prop bets. Just slap an app on your phone. All sports have pushed for this and football is the worst. Yet we acted shocked when players get caught gambling.

Extremely unlikely.
The appeal the NCAA chose is expedited and the Judge left little room to overturn based on what little is there.
He basically says Sorsby will be hurt by not playing. That's pretty irrefutable.

Veteran Texas litigators suggest this won't be overturned at this level.
The Supreme Court of Texas may overturn it if they ever take it up but that would be more than year away and after his career ended.

I know people don't read old posts in the same thread; but I HIGHLY suggested the NCAA make a deal at 6 games. Sorsby's team had offered 4. --based on a Cincy volleyball coach getting a 1/3 of a season suspension.

In the legal world, 99% of the time the best thing to do is make a deal and avoid court.

what has been the past penalties for being caught gambling?
I recall its usually pretty harsh. So why the change?

I thought it would make sense to at least appeal it to try to set a precedence.
Sorsby may get to play this year, and he's gone to the NFL in 27. But if the NCAA can get it over turned in appeals, it would prevent the next case, and it will happen again from being decided by some random court room.

LOL, college football continues to be a hot, unmitigated mess. Sorsby probably "checked" into rehab as part of the legal strategy to claim he has a real addiction and as such, the NCAA suspending him would harm his recovery.

What a joke.

I hope the Big 12 and college teams find a way to stick it to TT. It would be wild if TT, in the face of pressure, followed the spirit of the ruling and kept him on the roster but didn't play him. But they've spent way too much in NIL to throw away a season standing on integrity.

Its all over the place basically.
The rule was written in 2023 to ban people for life and it was discussed this year but not changed..
And the NCAA has been absolutely trash at finding these offenses.
Kayshon Boutte was found to have bet a lot while at LSU. That was 2020. He was drafted in 2023 and is still in the NFL.
Nothing ever happened because he left school early. He was changed with a crime, but it was dropped when he took gambling education courses.
Hunter Dekkers and 4 other ISU players were totally banned.
6 members of UTexas football were part of a gambling ring. There was a self-reporting and 1 player was kicked off the team. Today 3 members of that group are still at UT.
The issue is the rule is a mess and the NCAA is terrible at discovering these cases.

The NFL banned Ridley for 2 years. They have a smart rule which was approved by the NFLPA.

That has not been the history with any case though.
In fact, why would Sorsby not just drop his lawsuit the day his NCAA career ends and it never have a true settlement?

they knew the deal, took the risk and used the collective outrage to say they need an anti-trust exemption.
Not unironically, schools int he Big 10 and SEC do not wan tto accept rev share limitatiosna nd even topday inc ourt players are arguing it is illegal to set those limits.

Its all a mess but Sorsby gives everyone a chance to rant and rave.

People are right to rant and rave. This is a joke.

It's odd IMO that no one is talking about the addiction.........
Imagine this leading to gambling debts and kids are forced to throw games.

A gambling addiction involves a persistent, uncontrollable urge to gamble despite severe personal, emotional, or financial consequences. Key warning signs include "chasing losses" (gambling more to win back money), lying to hide behavior, relying on others for financial bailouts, and feeling restless when trying to stop
