James Houston never wanted to rush the passer

Second on the team with 5.5 sacks in last year’s pathetic defense despite starting 0 games.

Definitely a player I want in my rotation.
I think there’s some decent talent and depth at edge.
Vets, rooks and in between. Nice mix. I don’t really understand why some are so concerned. They don’t ask anyone to play every snap, and with the tackles they now have, they ought to thrive, which in turn ought to mitigate the questionable corner situation well enough.

My gut tells me that Houston is a JAG value player that should be expendable, but I can’t really point to any data to support that other than coaches continue to put him at the bottom of the depth chart.

Last year he averaged around a sack every 30 snaps.

Just a few years ago he had 8 sacks on just 92 snaps ( 1 per 11 snaps)

For his career he has 15 sacks in 397 snaps (1 per 26 snaps).

His metrics are insanely good and he has a decent sample size to suggest it’s not just a few lucky plays.

Now it’s not a total apples to apples comparison as no team is going out of their way to double James Houston and setting game plans around him, but the rate at which he gets to the QB is right in line with the elite edge players.

The one concern about Houston is that his win rates don’t support the idea that his sack #s will continue. He won about the came rate as Rashad Gary did last year who had a similar number of sacks but with over twice the snaps. It’s still a respectable win rate though that should have value.

I’m with you. I’m very optimistic about the group of Gary, Ezeiraku, Malaki Lawrence, Houston, and Sam Williams.

And I don’t think Parker’s defense is going to be predicated on one guy getting a bunch of sacks.

It’s going to be a solid, fundamentally sound defense which benefits from everyone being good at their job, thereby helping everyone else to look good.

Right. They do not need a sack leader as to being ranked high in NFL stat category.
But as a unit and a team, the accumulative effect is what is needed. Sacks and pressures.

Houston is a very good rotational player. I have him making the 53. But he may be a cut candidate, as I believe he is a vet player not subjected to being claimed off waivers. Then be brought back after they make some roster moves.

I do think he's a good subpackage player. The leg injury his second season that caused him to be put on IR seemed to set him back some, but last year we saw some of what he showed in Detroit. He actually might be our best pass rusher right now, even though that's not saying much since Gary had 7.5 (in more snaps), Eze had 2, Williams had 1 and Lawrence is a rookie.

I expect us to kick Gary inside in pass rushing situations and have Houston as one of the ends. I think Eze and Gary will be our primary OLBs in the 3-4 front for run-stopping purposes, with maybe Williams rotating in, and I believe we'll bring in Lawrence and Houston as the DEs in the nickel.

I hope.this is correct, Stash.

I still think you need a guy. Philly, which is similar to what we'll see, was languishing on defense because of the pass rushers last year, so it went and got Jaelen Phillips, whom Carolina thought enough of to sign for $120 million.
