If I remember correctly, most were shocked that Mahomes went as early as he did and that the Chiefs traded up for him. They happened to be right but the draft is a crapshoot. Not defending how the cowboys have been managed

It was 50/50. Obviously the Chiefs thought the world of him. It's key to remember in both GOAT stories - Mahomes and Brady- the org drafted them, invested in them, replaced the existing starter and then proceeded to pair the QB with all-time great coaches. It wasn't just that the Patriots were lucky to draft Brady, but also lucky that Brady went to the Patriots.

The overall lesson here is that if the org isn't primed to groom a new QB and replace the middling current starter you got no shot at finding that guy other than dumb pure luck. It was not dumb pure luck that created Mahomes or Brady. It was deliberate intentional investment. No risk it, no biscuit.

I know you won’t agree but Dak, nor Romo for that matter, have had good team management. Dak has his warts but I’m not going to completely blame him. We’ve never had complete teams, or complete enough to actually compete for a championship. A couple came close though.

Brady and Mahomes went to much better situations and were great. But you don’t need a great QB to win SBs and there is plenty of proof of that. I’m not going to list all the other things that need to go right to win but I’m sure you know what they are.

Jerry deserves all the criticism he gets. Dak deserves some, maybe a lot. But do we have to hear it in every single thread? Even when it’s not about them? (I’m obviously not referring to this thread).

These boards are dominated by the negative, understandably so, and then complain about the few that are overly hopeful. Why can’t you let them be instead of making it your, not you specifically, job to make them see the light?

Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield look like completely different QB’s when actually given a good supporting cast with Seattle and Tampa Bay. It’s not about the QB chosen. It’s ownership and the decision to push reset so often and striking out with better coaches (along with poor and inconsistent scouting/drafting and zero team core identity). The 1-3 year ejector button on each team’s coaching staff and front office is the ticket to a perennial terrible franchise.

After the six year (utilizing one or more franchise tags) mark with a new QB-if the team has not made it to a CCG, then the team should pull the plug unless the QB is setting all time records for passing in lots of major categories. 6 years is plenty of sample size to take that step in the postseason. Partial or full rebuild at that point is best for the franchise in future years. One of Dallas’ biggest failures is the inability to move on from good players if they are not part of the solution to deep playoff runs.

omg i said that the other day. he’s due for a season long injury. i am praying not as i think this defense can get us to the playoffs if it all comes together. but if he gets hurt for 5 or more games, NYJ get a top 10 pic. and we get the 25+ of the packers.

Great post, but there are alot of quarterbacks who didn't get to a CCG in their first 6 seasons and that includes elite quarterbacks as well.

I don’t think so. I said complete teams. You’re looking at one aspect and not the whole picture. Were the coaches any good? What about the playcalling both on offense and defense, etc, etc especially when the games were important. Quinn’s Ds fell apart against any decent team and feasted on the crappy ones. Strike three, you’re out! Lol

I knew he missed games every other year but I didn't know the trend was that similar every other year.

Knowing that and especially with an older vet at QB the backup QB is so crucial.

Imagine we're 9-4 and Dak gets injured and has to miss 5 games. We're cooked. It'll just be another season where we had a lot of the pieces but just couldn't get it done. I certainly don't see Joe Milton getting it done.

You said complete teams as if you made your point clear. You haven't. What constitutes a "complete team"? To me, if you have a top 10 offense/defense - relative to the league - and you made the playoffs, your team is complete ENOUGH. If you have at least one top unit, that's the best you can do.

Do you think being the highest paid ever and continuously jerking Jerry back to the negotiating table is going to help "complete" the team?
