Big spending teams on WRs don't make the playoffs often enough

And that’s all well and true. I suspect the plan all along may have been to have him for two years then move on, also fine, but if he has a good enough season to the point where Dallas cannot afford him, then they won’t be able to lose him and not feel it.

So they’ll need to find a reasonably soft landing. Think about what you’d have to do in order to pull that off….you won’t be able to sign a comparable free agent, or they’d have kept Pickens….which leaves drafting one, or trading for one still on a rookie deal. For either scenario they will need their high picks if they aren’t planning to keep him.

I’m very indifferent on it, but if he walks, they can’t go giving us a Jalen Tolbert project replacement. That ain’t gonna work. Draft a first round talent or trade that pick for one.

Edit: point being, I wouldn’t trade a first or a second for a LB at this point in time.

If so, then it isn’t really having two WR’s on big contracts that keep a team from winning. It is being creative with the cap like Philly was when they won the SB.

Absolutely. Cap hits are everything. Philly's contention went away when the bigger cap hits started kicking in for their WRs.

Only way is to sign longer contracts and push the cap hits down the road.

I’m not advocating for either option, just saying if they decide to not keep him, they will need their premium picks to either draft his replacement or trade it for one, so I can’t go moving any of those picks for an off the ball LB, even though it would be quite the upgrade.

If I had to choose a route right now, Id let him walk, take the future third, and if the WR class looks as if contains guys that can start immediately, draft his replacement. Or….trade it for someone who might not even be available right now, but could be after this season.

If he gets the bag elsewhere, that meant he was a big part of the offense and they will need a suitable replacement, not a like third round pick with a seventh round type of talent.

However, the beagles decline was more than just about their WRs. They had a lot of other players that needed bigger contracts, not just WRs. And Jalen’s contract was probably a bigger issue as well.

'All true, but the fact remains that overpaying 2 WRs generally leads to non-contention. Only way would be end loaded contracts where the cap hits are minimal for 2-3 years.

We appear to be using void years more than before so my hope is we extend him and take advantage of that mechanism. We are still nowhere close to the eagles use of void year money, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. I just dont want to be so polar we are afraid to spend.

Hawk I agree with you. Except the Cowboys will be spending a ton in 2026 at the WR position.

We will be #2 in the league in WR cap space, spending $60 million in 2026.

Last year we spent $28 million just to compare.

This is a choice.

They could extend Pickens and cut that number by probably $15m if they wanted to.

No, but it was about who they had to let walk to pay WRs and QBs. They would've been better off paying Milton Williams and letting one of the WRs walk.

Its really difficult projecting when and where this FO will spend money. I think there are too many assuming if we let Pickens walk we will replace him with similar talent in other needed positions.

Until he finally got the clue after the clusterfudge of last season that we're not going to win w/o a D. And this isn't the first time Jerry built a bottom 3 D. He has a knack for it.

My opinion is it’s obvious we have upgraded defense. But how much is still to be determined .

No one can know until they hit the field against competition.
