Spagnola: Gary is Just what the Doctor Ordered

Here’s the net, the way I see it. Please correct me if wrong….

Dallas gives up:

Micah Parsons
2026 second
2027 fourth

Dallas gets:

Quinnen Williams
Kenny Clark
Rashan Gary
Malachi Lawrence
Whoever they would have lost by paying Parsons.

I’m sorry but considering how awful DT was for so long, the proof being getting bashed up the middle by good teams, I make that trade all day, even if Lawrence is only meh. I’ll take the upside.

Honestly that trade was really the base of my renewed enthusiasm, even if we all know that was not what they originally wanted to do.

...I think Jerry, won another deal.

Gary is the guy I'm really hoping can rebound and become closer to what he once was with GB, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Maybe he has a DLaw change of scenery type of year, but his pass rush tape has been trending in the wrong direction for several years now.

Pressure rate
  • 2022 - 19%
  • 2023 - 17.4%
  • 2024 - 12.4%
  • 2025 - 12.1%
Averate time to pressure
  • 2022 - 2.67 seconds
  • 2023 - 2.99 seconds
  • 2024 - 2.84 seconds
  • 2025 - 3.21 seconds
Number of quick pressures (under 3 seconds)
  • 2022 - 19
  • 2023 - 17
  • 2024 - 20
  • 2025 - 8
To put it in perspective a guy like Micah Parsons averages (roughly) a 20% pressure rate, 2.70 time to pressure, and 40 quick pressures per season.

Gary's numbers are that of a secondary rusher which is fine, but the downward trend is concerning. I thought he would rebound better last year after getting paired with Micah, but he actually continued his decline.

Nice article by Mickey, and giving some stats as well.

I liked this trade from the start. They have done a great job rebuilding this defense. Coaches and players.
Now let's see it on the field of course. We all know that.
Really for me what's more important it seems to be the theme of the day is what's his playoff record What's his winning percentage against above 500 teams? Just curious since defensive end should also carry a team How is he in big games against better talent?

It true rumor has it he was going to be cut anyway the Cowboys could have got him for free I don't know these are the themes for the day I am going to talk about every single position on the field and ask what their playoff record is because yes, every player is responsible for a playoff record OK.

Just want to be sure we have all the facts it's how they play in big games and big moments, how are they in comebacks. How is he when their team is down, I mean did he get two or three sacks in the 4th quarter?

I just want to be sure we got the right guy...

:muttley: .

Agreed. Even Mickey is talking about his tackling and run defense as being his best ability.

Every team needs that and Gary will be good at that aspect of the game, but we need a real pass rusher and currently we have exactly zero on the roster.

When you watch him, he’s been sliding every year and, while he’s a good run defender, his sacks and qb hits largely come off busted plays where, to his credit, he sticks with it and is sometimes the guy who is there at the end.

I like Gary jast fine but we needed a screwdriver and bought a butter knife (no offense to butter knives or to Gary).

I like the blend of vets, youth..and the middle in that room. I don’t know it all, but their jobs ought to be a little easier than usual with Q and KC at DT.

I think they will be able to figure out a rotation that can create consistent pressure, and at the same time not be such a mess vs the run. Football hasn’t been this fun in a while. I know, I know, but I’m starving and it works for now lol. Sigh.

He tore his ACL, case closed really. And given how he juked like a RB on the way to the passer and had poor conditioning, the injury was predictable.

Jerry clearly won this trade. It couldn't be more obvious. He deserves big credit.

I can't imagine what our D would look like paying Parsons. Not nearly as good that's pretty clear.

Agree, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that that’s not what they wanted to do.

Any success will be tripped over, so it’s hope on top of hope, but oh well. We got Caleb, I’m good. :flagwave:

Im trying to understand how you can play both sides of the fence. I am not trying to insult or challenge you.

And I get "cautiously optimistic"..so maybe it's that.

We have rebuilt nothing until it runs.

I hope he' just not a great force in stopping the run, like the pickup

All signs and indications they have rebuilt the defense for the better. Anyone that says otherwise, just wants to be negative as usual.
