I think when he said he wants to stay "no matter what" that was meant in context that he will be HC of DC. The next sentence makes it a bit clearer to me.

I think that "no matter what" is meant this way: now that jj offered me the HC position i will stay even if some other franchise offers me the same position ( or even something better).

There is no way this is true. Maybe there was one dumb team. This guy has been a middling OC for decades. Everyone knows this. The other comical part is that no one would have hired this guy to be Head Coach. Shottenheimer is a fraud and I expect more will see this next season.

Yeah, not well explained there.

I took it to mean that he was going to leave to call plays. But they wanted him to stay (likely because Dak loves him so much) enough to guarantee that he'd call plays here. And when interviewing him for all that, they decided he might as well be HC.

But I think yes, that means they'd have forced him on the new HC. Might even have played a part in Mike leaving.
