Nearly lifelong pet peeve: Personally, I do not care if it's a Pee Wee football quarterback, a 60 and over flag football quarterback or any quarterback at any level of football inbetween. A quarterback's job is not throwing picture perfect passes. It's 100% throwing catchable passes.

Serious question. Dead serious question. It is not a question to single out anybody.

Why is it necessary to nitpick this pass in any way, shape, form or fashion?

This was a 100% catchable touchdown pass. 100% of any criticism should go to the player dropping the pass. This is one of those rare times I will not add, "in my opinion."

It can be the whole point of the thread, which I believe is irrelevant since it is based upon a generality of 'everything' quarterbacks might be criticized for. I posted a detailed OP following the first Philadelphia game of CeeDee Lamb dropping catchable passes. My post, that you have quoted, specifically targets a single dropped receiving attempt.

Anyone and everyone can throw rocks at everything quarterbacks may or may not do well. My post has solely to do with Roger Staubach throwing a totally catchable pass. That's it. It is unnecessary to suggest mix it within the usual CowboysZone quarterback conversational quagmire.

The point of the thread was to have a little fun, and to see what zoners couldn't.....lol

I've personally never heard anyone, here or in the real world, blame Staubach for that play. Some, like me and apparently you and clearly Staubach, just look at the play and try to see what happened. It's not about casting blame or nitpicking. It's just being a fan and trying to understand the game and all is nuances.

p.s. If I were you I wouldn't bet my lunch money on me remembering something you posted 18 years ago. Especially something so reasonable and which I agree completely with.

^ Somehow, some way, what I say does not penetrate for everyone hearing or reading my position on quarterbacks and passing the ball:

It is not necessary for any quarterback, including greats like Staubach, to throw perfect passes. Ever. A quarterback's only passing responsibility is throwing catchable passes. He threw a catchable touchdown pass that Smith dropped. I am forever clueless why that is never the end of the story.

Ergo, it has been rare for me to speak with anyone else about that one play and the other person wonder why Smith alone dropped that touchdown pass. You are 100% correct. We agree to disagree.

Cowboys fans would have an entirely differect perspective in the middle of a 20-year winning streak.

I mean it. I became a fan in 1970 and my Cowboys had 16 straight winning seasons from that point. I was 13 years old in 1970 and the Cowboys didn't have a losing season until I was almost 30.

During those 16 Landry years I witnessed 10 conference championship games and 5 Super Bowls, that is no B.S.

We would not have been excessively critical of the Cowboys because we would all be defending them against the army of trolls that would descend upon this forum.

The Cowboys were absolutely despised by the rest of the NFL in exactly the same way as the Patriots today.

Just in my conversations with other fans I can tell you that they were so jealous just in the Cowboys ability to acquire talent. It was pure genius.

How do you have 20 consecutive winning seasons and still end up with the #1 or #2 overall pick three times during that period?

How do you end up with a generational RB (Herschel Walker) with one of the best college careers in history by burning a 5th round pick?

How do you end up with one of the best QBs in NFL history (Roger Staubach), a former Heisman trophy winner by using a 10th round pick?

How do you end your season 11-3 and still get the #2 overall pick (Tony Dorsett), a rookie that helps you win the Super Bowl the following season?

This drove the rest of the NFL crazy and I loved it.
