Most were before my time, but still hard to argue that top 4.

If Players only:
Lilly
Staubach
Smith
Allen
We need five because I cant leave off Landry or Larry Allen in good conscience..
Since we can't leave Landry out of the equation I'll settle for merely renaming a certain body of water to the "Gulf of Larry"

Its a win-win really

I view these 'Mount Rushmore' selections to be about the most important individuals to the story of a franchise/league/etc.

For the Cowboys, I feel you have to include Staubach and Landry.

The other two are the ones in contention, but it's hard to argue against Mr. Cowboy and Emmitt, so I really like your selections.

Just to have some variety though, I'll go:

Staubach
Landry
Irvin
Jerry (unfortunately)

Maybe we should just do this in Eras have 4 of the players actually per era I mean I what you want to do cut off at 20 years or every 10 years.. Literally too many great players and even coaches that have come through here to only have 4...

A little different with the president's because there hasn't been really that many but there's thousands and upon thousands of players and lots of coaches that have come through here versus 45 Presidents but many of them had second terms and stayed longer.

For 250 years they only 45 to pick from...

So how many players and the Cowboys have come through since 1960 I'd say it's a whole lot more than that,

So you can't just have four head mount Rushmore for Dallas, in my opinion..

That's why I think there needs to be one every 20 years or we need to stop calling it Mount Rushmore there's just way too many players and coaches to choose from since 1960 versus only 45 individual unique presidents in 250 years little easier to pick four of those..

Wouldn't be a fair list if you just have to pick 4, because you say Roger and Landry have to be on there but some say maybe they can't because they have a different list..

This furthers my opinion that lists and rankings are just opinions and I don't care what they are people are gonna debate what they should be here's what I mean in.

It's very subjective and I know Landry had a longer career but Jimmy was almost as successful in a six year Versus a 30 year... Of course Landry is on the list but you could debate it.. I mean Roger versus Troy you can debate that all day if you want because they both had great offensive lines great teams and great running backs , would we really be wrong if somebody wanted to pick Troy..hmm

That's fair. Given the constraints of the assignment I'm just laying out my reasoning.

The story of the Cowboys is viewed through many different lenses. Some people see the stoic and revolutionary figures like Lilly, Staubach, and Landry as the core DNA. Others think of the 90s flashy dominance. Some see the hapless flailing of the Romo-Prescott era.

For me, I'm picking the people that I think contribute to the story the most. Not saying you're wrong or that I'm right, but I personally find it hard to leave off Landry because he was just so iconic, and over time Staubach is the one player that even football heads around the league most remember.

But also, I'm 38, so the Story of the Cowboys has mostly been faint memories of the 90s glory days followed by Jerry transforming us into a circus.
