Your biggest reason for optimism

The worst defense in team history has nowhere to go but up. I am optimistic about Christian Parker helping turn this dumpster defense of the last two years become better. We have an infusion of talent at several positions and Parker’s new influence has certainly been a shot of good adrenaline.

Having said that, Parker is not likely to go from a defensive assistant to a HOF coordinator in one season. I don’t think it will be immediate. And we still have holes at LB and edge. Lots of question marks.

This team has the talent to make the playoffs and I believe they probably will. The question after that is do they have enough to compete with the big boys in the playoffs? I doubt it. Sorry - just keeping it real.

I’m optimistic about the fact we have an overall more talent at defense and a better DC. Eberflus was trash with us last year. We got some young guys on defense with a lot of potential and some solid veterans. I’m excited to see Quinnen for a whole season.

Also something that kind of flew under the radar. I’m optimistic about CP because Jerry didn’t pick him, Schotty did. We’ve had 2 fundamental changes from the FO since this time last year. 1- we decided to get serious about stopping the run. 2- Jerry didn’t hire the DC and undermine his HC.

And equal to that is for these 2 bookend passblockers to even hold up well enough for the full season just to reach the playoffs.

Yep, no matter how hard I shut or squint my eyes, I can't seem to see past these 2 realities.

Yeah, not likely to happen. Especially the bookends. They're on their own. No one is helping them. They can't be propped up.
 
Funny how 30 years will affect optimism. I’ll be rooting for the boys anyway. Maybe we can put it together. Defense will be better. Let’s see if the offense can outperform the good teams.
 
I am cautiously optimistic.
Pickens gives Dak a new weapon and our running attack seems good.
The defence will be someone improved, but it will still suck.

My own biggest reason for being optimistic is mainly the defense.

In Year One under Schottenheimer, the Cowboys offense was playoff caliber. It wasn’t perfect, but it was right there among the best. And all starters are returning, so I feel good about that side of the ball.

But the 2025 defense was an absolute disaster. And there’s nowhere to go but up. And I feel they’ve improved a great deal in personnel.

But I’m most impressed with the coaching staff they’ve been able to put together.

Consider the pedigree of these coaches:
  • Christian Parker - he’s coached several of the best defensive backs in the entire league. In 2025, his Eagles secondary ranked 8th in passing defense (189.8 ypg) and 5th in scoring defense (19.1 ppg) and allowed the fewest passing touchdowns in the league.
  • Derrick Ansley - In 2025, his Packers pass defense ranked 11th in the NFL, giving up 194.1 yards per game.
  • Marcus Dixon - In 2025, the Vikings defensive unit ranked 2nd in passing yards allowed (158.5 ypg). Dixon has had a significant impact on both the defensive linemen as well as the linebackers in his defense.
  • Brandon "BT" Jordan - served as a pass rush specialist for the Denver Broncos, where he helped coach a unit that ranked 1st in the NFL in total sacks.

The proven track record of this staff is what gives the most confidence going into this season.

The defense's transition from red-headed stepchild to the focus of Jerry's love and attention is enough to get me excited. Just having the possibility of having a playoff quality defense again gives me tingles. :oops:
 
It is called irrational optimism or ‘hopium’ buddy @Stash. All fans have it at the start of the season, some completely over the deep end

Good on you but expecting a first time green DC to overturn 30 years of garbage or a QB who has been below mediocre in the playoffs for 10 years to suddenly turn it around in year 11 is irrational optimism IMO

I will be ‘optimistic’ like i am every year but as a Jerry Cowboys fan you learn to expect the worst
 
The Texas Longhorns should be able to compete for a National championships
 
Defense. Our D is loaded w/ quality players. Staff wouldn't make a hill of difference w/o the added talent.

What does that trophy look like?

The franchise was never going to die. There was a time when the purpose of the NFL owners wasn't to be profitable but to enhance the reputation of their actual businesses by giving something back to their communities.

Jerry revised history by claiming the team lost money it was never supposed to make. The real problem was the previous owner, Bum Bright, whose oil business bottomed out so he tried to profit on the NFL during the Cowboys most challenging seasons.

The NFL is a tax-free entity. or at least it used to be.

Teams used to be named after the owner's business. The Decatur Staleys were named after a furniture store. The Green Bay Packers were named after a meat-packing plant.

Regular middle-class guys or gals used to be able to buy tickets for their whole families. The teams and their stadiums used to be a partnership between that city and the owner.

Then came Jerry Jones.

He wasn't the first to turn an NFL team into a profitable venture but he did supersize the potential by pay-for TV contracts and deceptive season-ticket packaging with the majority going to corporations.

Jerry priced the Joe Footballs right out of the stadium and reneged on a promise by commissioner Pete Rozelle that the games would always be free to watch on TV.

The only thing that Jerry did right that was football-related is that he promised Jimmy Johnson, who was being courted by several teams, that he would have full control over football related decisions. That is what brought Jimmy Johnson to the Cowboys. It had nothing to do with some mythical college friendship.

As soon as Jerry Jones started interfering, Jimmy wanted to bolt. He knew he couldn't sustain the success with Jerry in any decision-making aspect of the team itself.

Jimmy Johnson, Hall of Fame coach and accurate prophet.
