All Time Cowboys Mount Rushmore Always Debated

I’m not so sure about that. I love Emmitt Smith, but I get tired of hearing how Zeke only looked good because he had one of the greatest offensive lines ever assembled. The offensive line matters, but so do the coaching staff, the defense, and the entire team. The way opponents play you and plan for you is about the whole team, if they have to respect the receivers, they back off and let Emmitt do his thing. Those “pick your poison” teams were great, and that’s why it’s hard to choose just four players. It’s the classic chicken-or-egg question: what truly made Emmitt great, besides his talent as a running back? Did he just happen to be on one of the best teams with one of the best offensive lines? Same with Troy, people have said he was carried, just a really good player who benefited from a great team.

These debates can go on forever, which is why I say there’s no way to pick four players from two dynasties and some of the best teams ever assembled in the NFL. Even in this era, Zeke is a great back, but I wonder what he could’ve done playing with Troy, Michael, that offensive line, that defense, and that coaching staff in a run-heavy era.

Emmitt Smith was a great player and deserves to be up there, but there will always be a “but.”

The OP got it right IMO. If you make it a player's only mountain and Landry has to come off, then Larry Allen is the fourth.

There is only one indisputable person that belongs and that is Landry. The next person would probably be Roger but that is somewhat debatable. The next two is difficult because of the many deserving players. I’m not even going to attempt it.

I started watching in the mid 70's so I can't really speak to those prior. Also, I think Landry & Jimmy should be on their own mountain. For players, I'm going to say Roger, Emmitt, Irvin & Allen. That mountain needs to be bigger. Too many who are deserving.

I can't limit it to just four players. I could have a Mount Rushmore of just #88's. It seems wrong to just include 4 players, but here it goes...

I pretty much feel it’s Roger as well. I only stipulated that since some in here would not have put him in. Maybe just a couple though. But IMO, Roger belongs for the reasons you stated.

White is very hard to leave off, but that's why a "Mt. Rushmore" is hard to choose, there naturally will be deserving people left off. I can't really argue with who the OP chose though - I would pick the same. Randy White would be my next man after those.

Emmitt isn't usually mentioned in the top three of all-time running backs. You need to surf the internet more. Jim Brown, Walter Payton and Barry Sanders are generally recognized as the top three RBs ever.

My fandom began with the 74/75 season so I just missed Lily's contribution.

I feel somewhat, no scratch that, very comfortable in ranking Tom and Roger as 1 and 2 by their combined impact on Cowboy team success.

I believe Roger had a nickname of Captain America during his 70s tenure as QB for what's its worth.
Being the captain of America's Team and all...
