Spagnola: Alas, Paying Respect to CMDR Prescott

https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/spagnola-alas-paying-respect-to-cmdr-prescott

Good article by Mickey.
Though We know how this will go. I doubt many will actually read the article.

He does mention about the lack of playoff success. But also says this.

"Cowboys, have been haphazard, without much thought, and mostly based on the inability of the Cowboys to either reach the playoffs every year or the inability to even win two rounds of playoff games, and of course, from these surface evaluations, that then all falls on Dak's shoulders.
Because as we know, the only members of an NFL team with a record are the head coach and the quarterback, the commanders, right, allowing the likes of a wide receiver or defensive end escaping any sort of the record-related wrath."

Can't resist turning, er, returning to Bill Parcells for his commonsense assessment of the quarterback position:
"They aren't out there playing singles."

Oh how true all of that is.
No I am not defending Dak.
Blah blAh blah. . . when the Bills lose I dont blame Josh Allen. When The Cowboys lose I do blame Dak. There is a difference.

Because when the Bills lose I know Josh played His heart out and was the reason the Bills were there.

When the Cowboys lose I know Deal was just another guy on the field

Does it amaze you that Jim Kelly had four tries at winning a Superbowl and failed.... then all of a sudden, Nick Foles, Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer come right on in and win the Superbowl on their first try?

Is it fair to say that if either Dilfer, Johnson or Foles had played on those Bills Superbowl teams that they all could have won 1 or 2 Superbowls for Buffalo?

Think about that for a minute.... Jim Kelly had arguably a better overall team and coaching than the other 3 quarterbacks that I've named and couldn't win one like they did. Crazy huh....
Kelly made it to 4 SBs in a row. Maybe Dak will have 4 playoff wins before he retires. Except for the Giants the Bills were crushed by their opponents. Kelly had no chance.

The identity of those teams were the trenches.
They scored the 1st and 3rd most sacks in those 2 SB winning seasons.
In 2007 they also ranked 4th in rushing yardage.
In 2011 they fell to dead last in rushing as they opened up all spread passing to address RB injuries and still only allowed 28 sacks while having 589 pass attempts because it was a really good pass blocking OL.

Most Super Bowl QBs simply took advantage of really good situations. Matt Stafford didn't go from a bum in Detroit to great in LA. He simply found a coach who was smart enough to put it altogether and identify when it wasn't together, so they punted those seasons and played again the following year which has extended his career.

There are a very small handful of guys EVER who have won SB based largely upon their play.
Modern guys: Brady once,. Peyton once, Mahomes once. Everyone else had 1 elite trench group (top 6) on at least one side of the ball or both sides in the top 10.

Sam Darnold has been through 5 NFL teams. FIVE!!! But having a top 5 DL and top 10 OL was enough.

And this isn't to defend Dak at all. It is defend being fiscally responsible going forward at QB while making smarter fans.
Overall you are correct. But did you see Stafford's game winning drive in the SB? Kupp was covered like a blanket and Stafford threaded needle after needle getting him the ball. Dak could never do that. He doesn't have the ball placement or the velocity to do it. He simply lacks the arm talent. Stafford is a very bad comp for Dak.

It could've been worse. We could have gotten stuck with max dollar contract quarterbacks who never won a playoff game before like Justin Herbert and Kylar Murray.
I feel so lucky after reading this.

I do think Dak and company make some noise this year. I also think Dak had a couple of stinker seasons. But the total package was better than we have Responded to.

Read the article, its a piece with some facts and some extra fluff. We all know Dak is a good regular season QB, anything to the contrary to this is just bs. The problem with Dak is he isnt good when the lights shine brightest in the playoffs. Suddenly that probowl QB with amazing stats and QBR becomes medicore. Why? One of many examples with Dak / playoffs and turnover prone.

First-Half Passing Statistics GB 2024 wild card as seen below:

(He then proceeds to tear up the 2nd team defense that GB starts for the 2nd half, further strengthening my point)
  • Completions/Attempts: 13-of-21
  • Passing Yards: 87 yards
  • Passing Touchdowns: 1
  • Interceptions: 2 [1, 2, 3] (Pick 6)
Dak is what he is until he isnt - a good regular season qb who faulters in the playoffs. Dont like it? PERFORM

Dak hate is real. And for ignorant reasons.
I seen Allen do some very stupid things that cost on them wins. At least Dak it is more of a physical limitation. Not mental.

Because the outcome remains true until they prove me wrong. I hope they can prove me wrong but so far it doesn't look like it.
Thing is the difference between great and bad isn't overwhelming. Look at the Seahawks. We've been as good as they were before last year. They obviously made better decisions.

The same people who defend Dak call Romo a choker.
And vice versa from what I've seen. It's all just misplaced blame.

I believe several Super Bowl teams that could have won with either Romo or Prescott. The two Giants teams with Eli Manning, the Eagles team with Nick Foles, etc.

And that TD was against prevent. Before that drive it would have been pitiful. I don't have the stats in front of me.

Except Allen is WAY better than Dak. There isn't much of a comparison, really.

You can respect Dak for someone naming him the 6th best QB in the NFL, it means nothing until he wins something meaningful. You can also respect a dog if it does not bite you.
Which of these QBs are currently better than Dak?

Your criteria was playoff success. Anyone not on this list has never played in a conference championship game so they can’t be better than Dak by your criteria.

I’ve arranged them by current tier

“Elite”
Patrick Mahomes
Matthew Stafford
Joe Burrow
Lamar Jackson
Josh Allen

Second Tier
Brock Purdy
Jayden Daniels
Jared Goff
Jalen Hurts

Has Beens
Jimmy Garoppolo
Aaron Rodgers
Joe Flacco

Never Were
Case Keenum
Marcus Mariota

Dak wasn't the first highest paid quarterback in NFL history. So show me the data proving every highest paid quarterback at their times was the best quarterback in the league, every season they were the highest paid.

If it wasn't like that for them, then explain why you expect it to be like that for Dak.

Perhaps you can enlighten us.....
Dak has never been the best while both his contracts made him the highest paid.

This is true but the rest of the team also needs to elevate their games in the playoffs. If it was just Dak playing poorly in the playoffs it could be overcome in many cases.

People love to spin the narrative that Dak gets "deer in the headlights" syndrome come January while ignoring the fact the rest of the team does the same.
So Tank, who lots of people liked to dog, just won a SB. So apparently he was good enough.

This again???

Blame the Jones Boys for paying Dak that kind of money. They knew what Dak was both times they paid him. Support Dak or not, how many of us would have turned down the kind of money being offered if they were in Prescott's shoes?

I don't know why so many fans are under the delusion that more money turns a player into something he's not. Of course it DOES serve as a built-in crutch to support a narrative.
It takes 2 to tango. Give the same blame for Dak as you do Jerry.

Agreed. Quarterbacks and coaches are the only people that get wins and losses assigned to them. For obvious reasons. But it doesn't always tell the whole story.
This I can agree with. But either of them can definitely lose the game by their cumulative play. Not just a single mistake, typically.

Dak has never been the best while both his contracts made him the highest paid.

And that's very true, but its not like he was the first player in the NFL who was the highest paid at their position but wasn't the best in it. I'll guarantee you that every highest paid player at their positions around the NFL, aren't all the best at their positions.

Its just business.
