Any team that traded for him was going to have to negotiate a new deal with Brooks, so now that is already done… if the new team agrees to the extension Miami gave him then it is doable.

I believe the new team can choose to take some of the bonus money but I’m not 100% sure about that.

I guess it is possible but in my mind it is highly unlikely to happen…. I’ve been wrong before though.

I believe they'd have to eat the signing bonus and restructure bonus, which means taking a $15 million cap hit instead of a $6 million. I think if they were considering trading him, they would have worked his contract differently so that the cap hit for them would be minimal. For example, using roster bonuses instead of a signing bonus. There were ways to do it to keep the dead hit down for them and push that off on the team that would trade for him. They did not do the contract that way.

Miami is now set to pay Brooks $6 million. He has a dead cap hit of $34 million. Now, whoever traded him would assume some of that dead cap money, but still, Miami gave him a $12 million signing bonus and $3-plus million restructure bonus that would accelerate onto its cap.

No, teams that get the player do not get any dead money. That is money that has already been paid to the player.

3 years is not a long-term deal. They're in rebuilding mode so in his last year of his deal would be the earliest that miami would be ready to compete and then you would have to sign him again to a much bigger contract. If he was a building block, you sign him to atvleast a 4-yr- preferably 5-yr deal.

It's possible that Dallas was only willing to give a day 2 pick for a longer deal if the dolphins took the hit on some of the money keeping the contract around 10 million aav for dallas.

If people would take the time to actually get informed - a big ask nowadays - they would learn that a trade is still manageable.

In fact, Miami could very likely get better draft compensation because of the extension and the cap hit they would be taking.

It makes the player more attractive, not less. In essence, they’re buying draft picks, similar to when Cleveland traded for Brock Osweiler.

I hope the Cowboys wouldn’t be giving up their 1st round pick, but I’d give up a 2nd in this deal.

The question is draft capital cost? Is he worth a 2nd? Or will Dolphins depart for a 3rd? If a 3rd? Then I am on that trade like white on rice.

You couldn’t get him for a third before the contract. You have no chance to get him for a third now

It’s entirely possible this new contract gets both teams to agree to move forward for a 2. Question is when will Miami be ready to punt on the season. Now or in season.
