I'm not defending Broaddus as I can't stand the guy but he worked under Parcells for 3 years through 2005. He didn't get rid of him right away. Same with Lacewell, as he was in Dallas through 2004, the first 2 years of Parcells tenure.

You don't spend a 1st round pick on a player with only 8 games starting experience in college. Why wasn't he starting in his senior year right off the bat!!! That's a red flag.

And then we drafted a player who only played RT in college and moved him to left side..

It’s no secret going into his third year as a #1 draft pick in 2024, Tyler Guyton needs to show some major improvement to be able to hold down the all important LT position.

LT is clearly one of the most important positions on the field. If you have no confidence your QB’s blind side is competently protected, your offense is vulnerable rather than a juggernaut.

Guyton’s first two years have been a mixed bag of uncertainty. He is certainly physically gifted for the LT position with arm length, athleticism and size. But he has been too often injured, had way too many penalties, and looked lost at times. It’s obvious the Cowboys FO is concerned based on things Schotty has said about opening up competition at LT and drafting T Drew Shelton in the 4th round this spring.

It’s not too late for TG to turn it around and meet his potential. Here are the areas where he must show major improvement in order to regain the confidence of the organization that he can be counted on:

• Durability- Guyton has played in 25 of 34 possible games so far in his short career. When Guyton arrived in 2024, although he was big, he was raw, lacking some strength and a lack of conditioning.

That can improve with better commitment on his part to getting stronger and in better physical shape. So far this off-season he has seemed more committed to being in the weight room and in better physical shape.

• Penalties - In his first two seasons, despite missing 9 games, Guyton has had 24 penalties in 25 games played. Ouch. His rookie year, he led the team in penalties with a whopping 18 penalties against him. Here is the breakdown of penalties against him in 2 yrs:
  • False starts : 9
  • Holding: 9
  • Illegal Formation: 3
  • Illegal block: 2
  • Illegal man downfield: 1

If Guyton can cut back on his penalties, especially the mental errors, he can become way more effective.

• Professional preparation - Occasionally, Guyton has looked lost or unprepared. LT is a a “island” position. Unlike Guards, Tackles don’t get a lot of help. So being prepared about protection packages, studying film on your opponents and having a solid commitment to being a complete professional football player is a MUST.

We’ve seen some positive signs this off-season. TG has been working out and learning from other players to improve his technique, being in better shape and overall just showing a stronger commitment to being a pro.

As Cowboys fans we all must hope that Tyler Guyton shows he was worth his first round selection and can at the very least be a competent NFL offensive linemen. I’m pulling for him. Because this maybe his last chance.

Absolutely. Durability is key for him this year. But he needs to get strong in his upper body, and quicker to cut off inside moves. I guess one could say he needs to get better everywhere.

Switching sides is a much bigger deal than people realize. It’s not just switching your down hand, your kick step changes, your footwork switches. It can feel alien making that switch and some guys never get comfortable. Lane Johnson was drafted with the plan to kick him to the left side after Jason Peters moved on. He couldn’t make the transition so they left him at RT. Teams move rushers around so much RT vs LT value pretty equal.
The bit I’ve really watched Guyton, he moves well but his technique isn’t great and he plays with bad pad level at times. He needs to get stronger and nastier. More strength will allow him to trust his technique more.

I'm agreeing with the Eagles fan. Guyton is obviously athletic for a man his size but seems to lack raw power and that nasty factor (spoiled by Erik Williams). OL need a certain mindset that I'm not sure he has. I hope it develops this year. I don't really follow the draft that much but what is the impression of Shelton? Does he have future starter potential? It would be awesome to hit on a later OL pick. Dude has the same last name as me, so I'm rooting for him.

I should have been more precise; Lacewell was made an errand boy and Broaddus was demoted. But both were certainly sidelined. Lacewell if I remember right was close to Jethro which was probably why he lasted as long. Remember how Broaddus has always been angry at BP?? There was a reason,

Most tackles have played it since high school by the time they get to the Pros. Guyton was a DT until his last year if I remember correct in COLLEGE. So he is still VERY raw.

Besides Shottenheimer (who I think is a complete fraud), the tackle position can derail the whole season. Guyton and Steele are the worst combo in the league. How many teams overcome terrible offensive tackles? I can't remember one.

Guyton has been good when 100% healthy but his play declines significantly when playing through or returning from injury.

Treat him like Miles Austin and his hamstrings.
- I.e. Give him double or triple the time of an average player to return from injury.

I can just about guarantee how yall felt about drafting Travis Fredrick.

Guyton was raw and uninspired to begin with. He may not develop, but to call it before the season is typical. Its even more typical to then complain about the draft when we desperately needed a pass rusher and would've been absolute fools to pass on Downs.

Besides all of that we have a qb and offense which proved they can work around our weakness at LT. As bad as this team was last year they were never going to answer every question in the off season.

Not in the 1st. We simply could not afford another 1st round tackle. Because if we don't fix the D, nothing else we do will matter.

NFL tackle is a really tough job. It takes talent, God given size, athleticism, toughness, hard work and intelligence. Guyton is missing some key traits so I don't see him working out.

He is? Maybe toughness. Got all the others, aside from possibly healthy.
