With such a loaded WR room, can Anthony Smith make the roster?

Or is he destined for PS

I haven't been following closely this summer with travel and other stuff going in.

How has Smith looked?

Haven't heard a peep about him, other than No C said he's fast lol. He doesn't really have much of a path to the roster unless he shows something on Teams - which he didn't in college.

This is a repost and I don’t want to type it all out :)

We have twelve WRs currently. The team kept 5 on the active roster last year

WR5 was his projection so he has some work to do to even make the team.

Anthony Smith - Big fast vertical

This is the first level, unproven, group he is competing against at the outset. None of them have played special teams yet but Holden at least practiced it last year.
  • Traeshon Holden - Big physical possession
  • Camden Brown - Big physical red zone and contested ball
  • Jordan Hudson - Big physical possession
  • Denzel Mims - Big fast vertical
  • Tyler Johnson - Physical possession

If he finishes camp up better than all of them, he has to beat out both of these guys. Good news for him is that neither play special teams so if he’s smart he’ll volunteer for it
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling - Big fast vertical
  • Johnathan Mingo - Big physical possession
Two of those become WR5 to join the top four
  • Pickens - Big, physical, downfield contested ball
  • Lamb - Big, versatile, route expert, YAC
  • Fluornoy - Physical fast contested ball
  • Kavontae Turpin - Fast versatile elusive gadget and returner - he’s basically a lock because he has unique skills the others don’t
Smiths biggest completion are guys who do the same thing like Valdez-Scantling and Denzel Mims. He may have an advantage because he’s younger, has contract leverage with a rookie deal, has some guaranteed money and has a draft pick cost on him.
Early buzz is good.

Edit: here’s an article with some good tape

Shotty said you can be a veteran or a nobody and make the team. Spots will be based off performance based. I also haven't heard much so my guess he is currently pretty low on the depth chart but if he starts to show more then yes most definitely has a chance.

Yea but you can say that about anybody. He's not going to get any real reps to show anything.

Personally, I think he should be in contention for a spot with Turpin, but the reality is that Dallas is probably only going to keep 5 WRs and 4 are already set (CD, Pickens, Flournoy, Turp). The last #5 has to play special teams.

They have kept 6 WR's before. And for a long time. Except the past 2 years it has been 5. Unless a short term injury then they kept 6.

I think they go with 5 again. As a 6th would not see much playing time unless an outstanding ST's player.
But with them possibly keeping 3 QB's and if they decide a 4th TE over a 6th WR. It will be tough for him to make the 53.
Also do they keep 9 or 10 OL. They had gone with few as 8 OL before.
Depends how high Jerry still is on Mingo as well. He is the 5th WR for now.

They may also decide to go long at one of the positions on Defense, or several positions. Until they get a rotation in place before they make any roster moves.
Such așa BD or LB they feel can revert to the PS. And bring up a WR or TE.

True but kinda hard when you got Cee Dee and Pickens but that does mean they will get plenty of reps during preseason games.

I think he ends up being a practice squad candidate. The top 5 is probably set with Mingo or Scantling being the 5. Possible there could be a 6th spot, but whether if its Smith or someone else they need a lights out preseason. Haven't heard much about him yet either and seems like a long shot at this point.

I kind of doubt it, but good luck to him. I bet Mingo or Holden get that 5th spot.

Aren’t players like this why practice squads exist?

I just don’t like how anyone can be poached at any moment.

I dont see how this guy makes the team, unless he can gun tackle on kicks at a high rate.
The bottom of the roster at any position has to contribute on special teams. Otherwise not only is making roster hard but even being active is very hard. If you aren’t a lock as a starter the special teams are your path to sticking around

With inactives they have shown they are willing to stash a guy without them playing STs.

I love this question. It wasn't but a month ago I questioned the Cowboys signing a no name WR giving them like 14 or 15 at that time. Yet people were questioning me and saying we needed yet another WR. Now, we are asking if there is room for Smith? A draft pick some said we stole in the 7th round and couldn't wait to see him against NFL competition and some thought could make the 53.
