If we are relying on our backup, the season is already over. Championship run only works with Dak with this team. Even if we'd signed a Mac Jones, its all Dak or bust.

The backup for Aikman was the worst qb that I have ever seen.

Beurlein was ok, and Bernie Kosar was fine that one year, didn't we also have Rodney Peete?

Most teams aren't going to consistently win with a backup QB. Might as well have a project who might turn into something like Joe Milton. Most of the time if the starting QB goes down, that teams season goes with it. There are a few exceptions but they are exceedingly rare.

There's no backup in the league who makes a difference if the starter goes down. Best you can hope for is that they keep the ship afloat for a month or so.

With the vast improvements on the defensive side of the ball, I started thinking about the one weak link this season. IMO, it is the backup QB position. Sam "Boog" Howell is a bus driver at best, while Joe "Rocket Arm" Milton III has been a complete disaster. It would suck if this season is a bust, not because of the defense but because we didn't invest in a quality backup QB.

Season is gonna be a bust if Dak goes down anyway. The concern should be how well Dak plays in big moments. Not backups.

The Chiefs signed Gardner Minshew, a proven QB with 47 NFL starts, to back up Mahomes in case he went down. Even with Minshew, they didn’t make the playoffs when Mahomes was injured.

So who exactly did you want the Cowboys to sign as insurance for Dak? There wasn’t anyone available who was going to step in and lead this team to wins deep into the playoffs.

If Dak goes down, the Cowboys’ season is probably over anyway. At that point, take the higher draft pick next April and move on.

I agree, its never good when your franchise QB cant finish the season. Very few exceptions. Look at the Broncos no way the pats beat them with Nixs behind center.

If backup QB is our Achilles' heel, then we're in better shape than many teams. I think our Achilles' heel is either DE/OLB or OT. If we fail to generate a consistent pass rush with our outside guys or if our starting tackles can't protect the quarterback, then it's not going to matter who our backup QB is.

Howell is a fine fill in for a few games, similar to Rush.

If Prescott goes down for the year, the season is over no matter who your back up is.

Yeah, I know….Foles, but that happened all of once, and he wasn’t a 1a starter at the time. Clear backup.

Aikman had many qackups including Steve Buerlein, Bernie Kosar, Jason Garrett, Rodney Peete, Wade Wilson, Randall Cunningham, etc. So which one are you referencing? Saying "the" backup really doesn't explain who you are referring to (given that most of the above had some varying level of success for a 2nd string QB).

Babe Laufenberg would be my guess.

First of all the league is diluted and there is not enough quality starting quarterbacks to begin with let alone quality backups that can win playoff games.

If Dak goes down the season is pretty much done anyway.
We are not very good at winning playoffs games when we have him starting let alone a backup.

That said the better idea is to get a real world handle on if Terrence Steele and Tyler guyton are going to be able to do the job this year and keep Dak healthy.

Rather than try and find another backup quarterback after we've already wasted draft capital let's see if we can find some quality offensive lineman that will ensure DAk makes it to the end of the season

Even though Dak has already had multiple seasons derailed by injury and is only a year older now, backup QB is not a position I fret over this year. Last year was a problem, but We already upgraded over last year with Howell. Unlike other backups, backup QB never plays unless injury so you don’t get those rotation reps that you get from other positions that make those cap dollars worthwhile.

I’m fine with Howell. I’m not spending cap dollars on a guy who if he plays it probably won’t be pretty any way. Someone mentioned Minshew, You want to spend $6M on him? Is he even going to make a difference over Howell? We are fine. It’s a problem for most teams. Draft a QB of the future or you have an issue. If we were SB favorites I’d consider strengthening it, but for us I think we are playing just like we should. Emergency guy to come in for a game or two. No chance this team makes noise in the playoffs with a backup.

Maybe a draft pick? I’m not saying this year, but it’s amazing how few times this team uses a draft pick on a QB.

Drafting a QB is a crapshoot any year. It often requires some luck in addition to great scouting. The packers have found three straight starting QBs by drafting one while their starter was still in his prime.

But you can’t get lucky if you never try.
