Our Achilles Heel

With the vast improvements on the defensive side of the ball, I started thinking about the one weak link this season. IMO, it is the backup QB position. Sam "Boog" Howell is a bus driver at best, while Joe "Rocket Arm" Milton III has been a complete disaster. It would suck if this season is a bust, not because of the defense but because we didn't invest in a quality backup QB.
If Jerry is actually committed and the season were to be cruising along at a playoff clip and Dak suffers an injury that costs him a couple of games, they go with the current plan.

If Dak has a season ender and the team has a legit shot, like they are leading the division, then they go get Jimmy Garrapolo.

He’s really the only option and he’s done well when surrounded by top skill position players like the Cowboys have.

Hrs also played in a west coast offense which is something similar to what the cowboys run,

The actual answer is that if Dak goes down, the season is over

Maybe a draft pick? I’m not saying this year, but it’s amazing how few times this team uses a draft pick on a QB.

Drafting a QB is a crapshoot any year. It often requires some luck in addition to great scouting. The packers have found three straight starting QBs by drafting one while their starter was still in his prime.

But you can’t get lucky if you never try.
I'm all for taking one in day 3 almost every year if the team doesn't finish in the top 3-5 overall picks.

Odds are they will be like Stephen McGee, but you could find a Mike White(became a backup for years) or get lucky and get a Prescott, or extremely unlikely and find the GOAT in the next Brady lol.

Yep, pretty much what I said a few posts back.

Say what you will but Howell and Milton are both undefeated in the playoffs.

Dak "Twinkle Toes" Prescott will stay upright this year.

I might take a ton of heat for this, but I am not out on Sam Howell.

Yes, he threw 23 picks his only season as the starter in Washington, but the guy had ZERO protection. Was sacked 76 times and was under constant pressure; which likely led to at least half of those interceptions.

He also did not play in a pro-style offense at North Carolina. But he has experience starting at the NFL level now and he's still young enough to shed his bad habits. Given another year or two the Cowboys might have at least a competent backup.

Aikman had many qackups including Steve Buerlein, Bernie Kosar, Jason Garrett, Rodney Peete, Wade Wilson, Randall Cunningham, etc. So which one are you referencing? Saying "the" backup really doesn't explain who you are referring to (given that most of the above had some varying level of success for a 2nd string QB).
Babe Laufenberg was atrocious so has to be him.

The reports since camp started is that Milton has been better. He's been taking the shorter routes instead of gambling deep all the time. Backup tackle depth is the achilles heel which is why it's probably going to be Tyler Smith moving over if needed.
