I've seen reports / updates about mafah and blue, but I don't think I've seen much said about Williams. Has he been playing? Playing well? any insight fellas? Thanks

Not much has been said about Williams in TC but if they never mention his name I wouldn’t worry about it. They want him fresh and injury fee in September. He’s probably not in the evaluation focus like the younger guys.

Guys like Mafah and Blue NEED the most reps and I would even say be careful about any hype said about them in TC or in PS games. Glad to hear they are getting the reps and hoping it’s not just hype. Blue has had flashes but he also fumbled vs rams the scrimmage - his biggest weakness in college. And one of many reasons why he didn’t play much last yr.

It’s entirely possible one of those guys get cut. Not saying they will, but Williams will be the workhorse going into the season. But he will need help as any NFL back nowadays does.

Stay tuned. I don’t think our backups at the RB position is entirely settled.

This breaks it down comprehensively. You can close the thread now. There are no other answers that are relevant lol. Williams isn’t getting a lot of work. They’re intentionally keeping him fresh and focusing on the rest of the group

Some in media have speculated the same.

I wouldn't expect to hear much. They are going to likely bubble wrap him this TC.

That being said, I fear a regression with him this year.

Media I've heard have said he's looked good. They've basically said the whole position has looked good. But they also aren't being tackled.
My general rule of thumb with training camp and pre-season reports from the team and the media that covers it…don’t buy everything they are selling. Wait and see what the regular season shows us.

Doesn’t mean none of it is true. It’s more like remembering that not ALL of it is true. This is the time of year when coaches and especially Jerry talk more about what they want to be true than what is 100% true. Sometimes the media buys into the hype too.

As the great Darrell Royal once said about players with a lot of potential: “Potential just means they ain’t done it yet.”

Well if it comforts any of us, iirc last year he was like shut down on day zero or something and we didn't hear anything, which seemed insane from the outside, including myself....but I guess they saw enough.

I was going to ask about RBs in a new thread, I heard on radio just now Blue still has fumbling problems...that Malik Davis continues to look good so they'll probably cut him lol... curious about the other guys.

It's funny to me how Malik Davis just keeps earning his role as the RB2 for this team imo.

When I watch his steady yet not spectacular performances, its like hes pretty good at almost all RB things but not quite great at any of them. Yet I still prefer him well above either Blue or Mafah.

He's one of the few players I don't fear regression from. He seems to be a guy who always shows up with his lunch pail. But yes, I don't expect to see him until East Rutherford.

Williams had a significant injury history

That's how we got him for a song initially.

Mafah has been practicing like his career depends on it. He might push Williams and that's a good thing. Mafah has had a good camp so far

Yes, Davis is more of a backup to Williams than Blue is, so it’s probably not either/or, but if Mafah doesn’t beat him out, he will likely clear waivers head back to the PS.

I believe the rumored backup player trade was for someone who could fill the role if Blue doesn’t pan out.

The few snaps I saw from the joint practice with the Rams, he looked fine. Seemed to pick up yardage each time, but it's always hard to tell when there is no tackling. Like on one run, he got about 3 yards before there was enough contact and the play was blown dead. No telling how many he would have actually gotten.

He doesn't have size, but seems to run with some power.

He doesn't have speed, but seems to still be able to find enough to get through the hole and outrun the defense if he gets behind them.

He doesn't have much shiftiness, but still enough to make the right cuts.

I'd prefer Blue's speed with Davis' all-aroundness or Mafah's power with Davis' all-aroundness, but I don't know if we'll get that.
