Is the Cowboys offense "overrated"?

I will never understand how you just look at stats and not the game. Minnesota, Detroit, and the Chargers defense held our offense down. Against Detroit we were down by double digits for most of the second half. Minnesota defense was the reason we lost to the Vikings. It’s funny how you left out the Denver loss.
Lions - False. Dallas trailed by 8 entering the third quarter and trailed by 3 with 9:52 left. The Lions scored 44 points lol.
Vikings - I don't know what this means. The Vikings scored 34 points. How is that the offense's fault?

I left off Broncos and Chargers because I agree that the offense was bad. But it is stupid to assign blame to the offense in games where they gave up 34+ points lol. That's just not in line with the reality of the NFL and ignorant of any context about how the rest of the league performs.

but it can't be an excuse for the offense not to continue performing. we have had people make the argument" well, you can't expect to win if the D gives up X points". well, if you are also going to tell me that they are a top offense, top individual players, etc., then yes we need them to put up points regardless of our defensive struggles. not going to win every one, but far too often we don't do much with our opportunities.

I think the Dallas offense was very good last year, probably elite. Every offense scores fewer points versus good defenses, Dallas included. I wish I could find a chart versus top 10 defenses to see what that looks like but Dallas was the top offense by efficiency versus top 20 defenses (so removes the shitters from the dataset at least). The offense had real red zone struggles and plenty of things to address but I do not think they were a bad offense even against good defenses.

I know what the point is it is just really stupid. How many times a year do they need to score 40 points?

They put up points all year regardless of defensive struggles - they had zero help as far as field position and turnovers relative to other top offenses. What is unrealistic is to blame the offense for games like Detroit. Are you really blaming the offense for not scoring 45 points? If, before the game, you said "Dallas scored 30+ points and had 420 yards on the road" you wouldn't think that was a strong performance?

I already posted how many games the other top offenses struggled. The expectation of what the offense should be is preposterous.

We aren't in disagreement. My only point is each unit has to perform even when the other may struggle. If they don't, they do share some of the blame.

Ok? The Cowboys defense struggled for like 15 games so that's not really a useful point.

What you're trying to say is that they should constantly win shootouts, which is impossible. With an average offense they would have been a 3-4 win team last year.

The posters crapping on the Cowboys offense have some learning to do.

This is the truth.

It’s fair to say it’s a little overrated. If Guyton performs and Steele can at least be average with redzone trips converting tds instead of field goals then it won’t be.

No, choke is the wrong word
It stalls out against a better defense
All good offenses, stall out against good defenses
That’s why you need a good defense, I don’t care how good your offense is, you need to get the ball back, field position, special teams, Cowboys are one dimensional last season
Agreed, not there are also throws and plays to be had that didn't get made in tight moments. There's some choke involved, too.

The champions averaged less than that.

Were the champions championship caliber?
I was referring to Williams. I wasn't the one who offered the team average. Thank you.

I can't say it any clearer than post #102. I'm really not sure why expecting a TOP offense to have a fair shot even in shootouts is controversial.

In 2025 our opponent scored 28 or more 10 times by my count. We won two & tied one. In 5 of the losses the deficits 8, 14, 17 twice & 20.

Don't you think we should have won more than 20% of those games? All our opponents didn't have top 5 defenses did they?

#16 in red zone scoring. That would be a good first thing to address.
Yep.
Spot on.
TDs in the red zone and more second half TDs and all of a sudden their offensive ranking category that's skewed by yards gained between the 20s becomes a genuinely elite offense.

That's how you differentiate between genuinely elite and over rated.
Good call.

Probably not.

They should be a top 5 offense and that's where they're getting placed typically.

I think you know what you're going to get with this group, but it hinges on:

1. Javonte Williams' health
2. Tyler Guyton's development
3. Fluornoy's Emergence

The first two are lynchpins, but Fluornoy has the potential to make this offense a nightmare. If he is able to perform consistently like he did at times last year, this could be an all-time WR Trio.

Not to mention how many times opposing defenses were in soft coverage because the game was out of reach
