Sonny Styles vs. Barham

It’s a natural (fan) comparison. Barham and Styles play the same position, from the same draft class, and play for division rivals.

If Barham is playing better so far than Styles, it is noteworthy that Dallas got him (pick 92) almost 90 picks later than Washington got Styles (pick 7).

That is a comparison that fans will naturally do.

Sonny Styles has looked lost and nowhere near what you’d expect a top 10 draft pick to look like. Will the light suddenly go on for him? Maybe. However, I’m seeing the same lack of LB instincts with the Commanders that was painfully obvious at Ohio State.

I said on this forum all during the pre draft process that I absolutely didn’t want Dallas’ first pick to be Styles because I simply didn’t think he’s a very good LB. He’s extremely athletic and a great kid, but I just didn’t like him as a player… certainly not early in the first round. He’s not very physical and doesn’t have instincts, but boy the guy can run fast and jump high.

Barham, on the other hand, looks like a natural linebacker who plays with a physical and mental edge that just jumps out on tape. Watching how quickly he has picked up his responsibilities in Dallas has been surprising and shows that Jaishawn is a natural football player. Even if you expected him to do well, you couldn’t have expected him to look this good this quickly.

Yes, we need to see it in games that count, but it is easy to tell now that he is going to be a good player. The only real question is just how good will he be.

It’s like bears fans and media calling Caleb Williams “iceman”. I can’t ever think of iceman as being anyone but George Gervin. Different sports, but still.

Yeah, every fan base has pretty much picked up the “Mooooooooose” that Cowboys fans did for Darryl Johnston.

All fan bases pick up already used nicknames. Doesn’t make it any less annoying though.

When we got Barham and I looked at the tape and scouting reports I've said we were getting a great value Arvell Reese. Both are physical and aggressive in the run game. Reese is the better athlete, Barham probably has better instincts. But out of Reese and Styles Barham compares more to Reese style of play. They both basically play the same position in their respective defenses. Both teams run a 3-4 base defense mixed in with a lot of nickel defense.

I kind of expected Barham to do this well this quickly. I felt he got downgraded in the draft because Michigan used him at DE. That happened because he was one of their top players and they needed help at end. I think if he stayed at linebacker, he's a late first-rounder, early second-rounder.

Well I really didn’t even watch him enough to have a good evaluation of him. I just never got around to watching enough of him to know.

I knew that he is a physical strong player but I didn’t have any idea how he would play ILB. He actually looks to have good instincts for LB… something I wasn’t sure about when he was drafted. That makes a huge difference IMO.

The team did a very nice job getting this guy at 92, that’s for sure.

I agree with that. It thought him more about moves to use to escape from offensive linemen when he rushes. I don't think it hurt his development, just his stock.

Barham attacks the blockers rather than let the blockers come to him hoping to sidestep them,he has experience both as a LB and DE while Styles is a space player who has only played LB for 2 years after outgrowing the Safety position.

I a fan of Barham but can't compare players based a preseason game.

FYI: I thought Styles was raw as a LB in college. Freakish athlete on a great team but instincts were questionable to me.

Many fell in love with him just on his testing numbers. I saw a player similar to Lve not a can't miss prospect. Time will tell, do like Barham's physicality much more, where Styles could be special in coverage.
