I don't know.... maybe we should also call it like it is on building million people metros in the middle of the dessert. No amount of flooding is going to supply what wasn't meant to be. Even the Mafia told Bugsy Siegel it was a bad idea. :muttley:

Absolutely this is part of the problem. It's not just in the desert either. I am in the suburbs of NY and the overdevelopment is changing the looks and feel and over small town in my area. Traffic, increasing water, sewer and school taxes are the result of overdevelopment. we now have deer, fox and coyotes roaming our neighborhoods because all the undeveloped land is now townhouses and condos. Poor planning all around.

I've thought about this as well. New Orleans does everything they can to keep water out. Build some infrastructure that can pump out their extra water and push it to the top of the Colorado River. Everybody wins.

Like you said....expensive and time consuming....but it's a solution.

Edit: I realize the absolutely enormous catch is elevation. We're talking about moving water from essentially sea level in Louisiana to the Colorado River system, where you'd eventually need to lift it thousands of feet into the Rocky Mountains. That means an absolutely obscene amount of miles of pipeline or canals, massive pumping infrastructure, environmental permitting, land acquisition, maintenance, etc......but........it's not physically impossible. We've already built ridiculous water-transfer projects in the American West.

The Romans figure this out 2000 years ago. I am sure was can figure it out too. Sure, it might be expensive but one completed it will be worth the cost.

btw, is New Orleans dealing with salt water from the gulf or fresh water from the river?

How about a viaduct from the Mississippi to the Colorado? Tunnel through the mountains if necessary.

Freshwater, as far as I know, from all the water the Mississippi is pushing down to them, plus the lake.

And the fact that it’s ocean water.
 
The upcoming El Niño winter will hopefully take care of that but expect catastrophic climate change events to continue because humans are so stupid.

The Mississippi River is freshwater, though. I wasn't talking about pumping Gulf water. New Orleans is literally sitting on the Mississippi, which carries freshwater all the way down from the interior of the country.

Lake Pontchartrain is a different story, it's a mix of fresh water and salt water, but the Mississippi itself is not ocean water.
The ridiculous part of my idea is the engineering/elevation/cost of moving that much water west, not that we'd be pumping seawater. :laugh:
