Have we become so used to Jerry that anytime he does bare minimum we praise him?

He was abysmal the second half of the season. It’s kind of like saying Clowney had 8 sacks….yeah he did but 3 of them came against the Giants. Sacks don’t tell the whole story I imagine if they did they wouldn’t have paid Micah 48 million and wouldn’t have traded Gary.
He was mostly abysmal the first half of the season too but he lucked into some sacks.

It is very well documented that he could not win passrushes quickly.

DLaw was one of the best run-defending edges in the league for basically his entire career lol

That's fair. Maybe I'm just still shellshocked at how useless we were at it last year and 2020 lol. And 2023 we were gashed alot (but I think he was hurt most of 2023). And I think it's nice that we seem to be focusing, not just on better pass defence, but we have seemingly multiple players that should be able to help stop the run. If we can hold runners to less than 3 yards a carry at least, that'll be an improvement, especially if we can force a lot more run stuffs for loss.

He had 7 sacks though…..yeah I mean I’ve already heard and read from Packers fans and content creators I know that’s not the best gauge but the guy wasn’t good and they were ready for him to go. Doesn’t mean he won’t be better here. But he’s been a underachiever.

2024 was bad but Lawrence was hurt.

2022 and 2023 they were top-10 in EPA against the run.

7 sacks is pretty insignificant given the volume of snaps he played. Houston had 5.5 and played half the snaps.

Gary - 54 pressure, 415 passrush snaps. 13% pressure rate.
Houston - 25 pressures, 182 passrush snaps. 14% pressure rate.

That's not to say Houston is a better player, but nobody thinks that Houston is some difference-making rusher.

How do you guys not get it? SSLB is a different position than WSLB.

Gary is a topnotch SSLB. Counting sacks is just a casual fan's way of rating players. Silly.

I mean, we did get gashed on the ground against Arizona, San Francisco, Buffalo, and Green Bay in 2023. That was something I found concerning that year too. What I'm excited about is (and it's a shame DLaw isn't still here) that we finally have a lot of beef up front. Imagine how much better we'd have been with more beef in the interior.

Sure, but that happens to every team, especially when the offense can't generate anything.

The pass defense was worse than the run defense against SF and GB.

Thats true about the pass defence. Either way, I think the defence looks to be much better as a whole. They look to, at the very least, be more balanced in a good way. And I think Parker can develop this defence into something special.

I mean, maybe lol. If you can't rush the passer and can't play man coverage the scheme doesn't really matter.

I have a very hard time seeing how teams won't just kill Dallas with 6-man protection schemes like they did last year.

Rushing is just half the job, unless you are just a specialist.

I think that's where the advantage of the new scheme actually comes in. I think Justin Houston and Eze can come in. Also, we will finally have a healthy Overshown, which we didn't fully have last year. I think having 3 big dlinemen up front should open lanes for our linebackers to better be able to rush the passer. That's where I think the biggest advantage looks like it'll be.

6-man protection schemes eliminate all that, and you can't run those personnel groups against 11 personnel anyway.

I don't doubt that this defense will be fine against 2 RB or 2 TE looks. But that doesn't matter if they can't get after QBs in more spread looks.

I mean, I will say this. I'd have no problem with us trading Bell for a pick and trying to pick up one more pass rusher. But, at the same time, I do think the front 7 looks better than it has in a couple seasons. It will take some time, but I do think this defence can become a top defence as the season goes on. But I do agree that maybe picking up one more pass rushing LB would be helpful.

If you can't stop the run, there is no need to worry about a pass rush. You would think we learned that lesson.

Exactly, and I do think that our pass rush should be fine. I think if we can shut down the run, our defence should be able to pin their ears back and attack the QB. I think we have the players to do that, and that's where our secondary should be able to feast and have it's advantages.
