Stephen Jones on Pickens

These guys are a lot of things, but covert is not one of them. These dudes broadcast their intentions as plain as day.

Whether, it's contract negotiations, the draft, or even trades these circus tent runners are always transparent. Both of the WRs are on notice that only one will be here in 2027 barring a 30 year curse breaking deep playoff run.

They’re gonna screw him again, as expected.

There was never a chance they were going to actually give him a contract. They’ll tag him again and try to milk a third year of his prime without him ever getting a long-term deal.

And before all of the crying about “he’s getting paid millions”, yeah, he is. Thats the way it works for elite professional athletes. But GP has the misfortune to play for Jerry and Stephen, who are gonna ride him like the rented mule they see him as. Any other team and the man would have had a new deal in March.

And you know what we’ll hear? We’ll hear all of the whispers and lies starting up as soon as the season ends. Jane, Broaddus, and Fish will start leaking stories of drama coming out of the side of Stephen’s mouth, and the usual laundry-lovers will pick up the Cowboys banner to slag Pickens all over social media.

The Cowboys have a 30-year history of fighting dirty. The only reason they didn’t do it this year is because they let GP believe the lie that they actually wanted him long-term and he took the high ground, Next year, though, when they know it’s gonna get ugly after they tag him again, the knives will be out and the front office will do their dirt.

The cautionary tale of Dez, the scam-artist fixer and thief the team forced on him, and the fake Walmart videotape they held over his head in the middle of negotiations, shows the real Jerry and Stephen.

I hate them. I really do. Just awful people.

They kept Tyler mouths shut pretty much all off season. Did not say nythobg stupid.

Then he says this. How is GP and the team is supposed to feel.

Dallas exec #2 is always obliged to pat himself on the back for his work. Is it possible to be humble about doing things that other GMs routinely take for granted? Obviously not, for Stephen Jones. ;)
Being sufficiently confident is one thing . . . but being absurdly self-involved is self-defeating. :muttley:

So now they are back tracking.
What idiots.
I like so much that has went on since around the trade deadline last year. With players gone, new players, new coaches. A fairly quiet camp. And then this stuff comes up. This team has to beat the opponents while also overcoming the Jones boys need for the spotlight.
They can't get out of their own way.

Like any employee would feel

No one is safe
We are all expendable
Every man for himself

This is why it makes no sense for fans to expect these players to say “aw, shucks, I’m just happy to be a Cowboy” while they give Jerry and Stephen a “hometown discount”

What meant was: we cannot pay the highest paid QB in history, 2 top 5 WRs, AND virtually whiff on multiple recent drafts.. and still field a balanced competitive team.

There is a little more here than the WR situation.

He was asked if the team was built to win now.

He responded by saying yes, and went on to say Dak is getting old which hints at no next contract.

Then he talks about the WR position only mentioning Pickens because he's the one that will need to be dealt with financially. He didn't rule anything out regarding either WR.

He is also not wrong about the reality of putting that much cap in the WR position and that there is a track record with regards to that.

Don’t forget.

In that Athetic article the everyone got excited about, the one that had quotes from Woody and Troy saying that Stephen would run the front office differently, the real headline for me went under the radar.

The silver spoon came with a huge dollop of privileged ego syrup.

“With agents these days, you give them an inch and they’ll take a mile,” Stephen says. He doesn’t like giving an inch, never has. “If a deal’s within striking distance, Jerry will lose this point and this point and this point and if it gets done, he’ll live with it. It’ll eat at me a little more.”

Critics of the Cowboys contend Stephen’s inflexibility has backfired in recent years as he’s assumed more control of the roster. Around the league, Dallas is known for being too stiff in contract negotiations; Jerry’s been accused of trying to bypass agents so he can deal directly with players, while Stephen is known for chasing bargains and tossing out lowball offers.

“Stephen seems to want to make sure there’s no secret who won the negotiation,”
Sturm says. “And I do think that gets them in trouble, because that’s not how pro football works, or pro sports work … if you’re an owner with a great-win loss record in negotiations, that’s probably not good, because you’re upsetting your greatest assets.”

“I like to win every last point,” Stephen concedes. “I gotta watch that.”

yea it's not like they were accused of molesting and bullying a teammate with threats of violence. Those are the good guys. You're clueless

He’s a cheapskate.

Weird considering he didn’t earn any of the money himself.

Dallas literally has the opposite scenario that’s going on in LA.. Both will drive the coordinators crazy.

I'm just going to enjoy him playing on another lights out contract year, and worry about it later. Pickens had crap at QB those years in Pittsburgh, finally has a decent QB and some consistency. I really do think he's about to blow up, which sounds funny because he did last year, but I think he's going to raise eyebrows even more this year. Let the boy become a man.

The thing is though they signed Bland, Osa and Ferg. And their play isn’t irreplaceable. Stephen is just talking. All him and his dad does. No matter what he says the rebuttal is always the Eagles did it. Are the Eagless playing under a different salary cap? If not either do better or hire someone who can. It’s tiresome and pathetic.
