Schottenheimer seemed very adament about wanting Milton back even saying they would love to have him back, so I think most of these so-called fault-based reasons are just copium or attention seeking media at this point.

Schottenheimer talked up Reddy Steward, Trevor Keegan, and half the players he just cut the other day, too.

Focused on the wrong things here I’d interpret as “not locked in to the finer details of being a serious QB”. Maybe he’s a last one in first one out kind of guy?

Thats not arm talent, that’s learned skill from repetitions and experience.

You can learn the mechanics to generate power from your lower body rather than just rely on your upper body and you gave great examples of players who have done that. I agree that strong armed players sometimes rely on that at the expense of expanding their entire skillset. A large percentage of the game is played between the ears and in the heart.

However, those who have the natural physical gifts will still exceed those who don't IF they work on the other aspects. Its why Rodgers can still flip his wrist at 45 and put it on a dime 30+ yards down the field. You can't replace those physical skills when things aren't perfect. QB's don't always get to have perfect form. They often have to improvise. That's why Mahomes is such a unicorn. All the physical gifts plus the mental understanding of the game & the heart of a champion.

I have no idea what Milton has going in the other departments (outside physical skills). Maybe there are legit redflags. It's just strange to me that we were hearing that he & Sam were neck & neck during camp. Obvious improvement we all saw. Yet now he was "focused on the wrong things". It just feels like we are getting some questionable signals.

Kinda like Malik Davis was a bad apple & not good enough. Yet 3-4 years later he's #2 and has never had any kind of issue. Makes ya wonder if he ever was the issue or someone just put that out there for other reasons.

I gotta believe Milton said or did something really stupid when they kept Sam Howell. Joe probably took it as an insult that Sam made the team and it must have turned some coaches off bad. I think Milton did something similar in New England.

That is plausible. But if they were keeping him too you would think he would be able to understand even if he was disappointed. Perhaps someday all the facts will come out.

The thing is, if Milton isn't on the PS when this all shakes out, which QB do the Cowboys get instead?

You still need a QB 3 to run the scout team in practice.

The HC said yesterday that if Milton didn’t come back on the PS that they would add another QB.

Yeah, based on everything I've read and heard through interviews, they think the world of Milton, so this sounds like someone reading something they want to hear out of something else said rather than statements of fact.

Any team that claimed Milton off waivers would have to immediately put him on the 53 man roster so it’s not surprising at all that no one claimed someone that probably isn’t going to play this year except in case of extreme emergency. He’ll get signed now to someone’s PS probably. Maybe even the Cowboys who knows.

Raw players who are not ready get cut and not picked up all the time. Every team is limited to 53 players, there's no room for more projects from the waiver wire.

Miami has Malik Willis backed up by Kent McCord and Brady Cook .

Cleveland with Watson as starter with Sanders as back up . Either of these 2 cities or perhaps the Jets with Geno Smith . Bottom feeder teams for sure but it’s an NFL job $$ with a faster way to clear out brush and get NFL starts under your resume Joe Milton .

I kept hearing that Howell had “NFL experience” in a horrific stint in Wash it’s time for Milton to start games on a bad team and get this “ experience “ going your 26 the clock is ticking in the “ first 48 “ .

I'm with you for the most part, but on this, we know Davis was a knucklehead when he blew his assignment in the Niners playoff game and they had to yank him. There was another incident or two with him also. Davis is one of the few who somehow did a complete 180 and became a model professional.

Last time I heard the phrase "He was focused on the wrong things." used on a QB was for Kyler Murray. He supposedly was more focused on playing video games all night than watching film. Maybe bazooka Joe is the same.

that's my thought too. Taking the news with a grain of salt, but we've seen the NFL where players clearly are talented but get distracted off the field. Or maybe the distraction lingers into on the field and preparation.
Hell, Paxton Lynch supposedly cared more about video games than learning a playbook. He was out of the league early, and there was no lingering fliers taken on him. I believe the NFL does have a tight lipped rumor mill among coaching staffs.

We get shocked over a player being cut here, or elsewhere and goes unclaimed.
I think some players just expose themselves with their own undoing on social media or a video capturing them doing something dumb, where 20 years ago the NFL had a better handle on keeping stuff under wraps.

Yeah, ideally all your QBs are physically superior to everyone else’s. But historically, the precedent has been that isn’t the best thing. I think guys like Rodgers and Lamar are huge outliers

Joe didn’t get cut because he didn’t do enough in those games, he got cut because he didn’t do the little things that are what really make great QBs great. He got cut because of the meeting room, because of playbook retention, because of comfortability after 2 years in the offense. Joe would have looked cooler than Sam if the #2 needed to play, but this is saying Sam is far more reliable to do what the coach needs to improve the chance of winning. Checkdown Charlie wins football games, it’s always been that way

This^^^^^Schotty touched on this at a presser after the second preseason game. Something about a strong arm can win a teddy bear at the fair but QBing in the NFL is much more. Milton lost this job between the ears and in work ethic.

It’s very simple, really. Milton did well in two of three preseason games and showed significant progress. Yet, Sam Howell was named QB2 behind Dak Prescott. Schottenheimer suggested Milton needs time to fully operate the offense.

“This is what guys who come from that spread system have to deal with,” Schottenheimer explained to reporters. “In terms of the learning curve of coming in and having to learn how to huddle, and call a play in the huddle, and make different decisions, and it’s not all done from hand signals from the sideline. Some of it takes a little bit of time. I think Joe is going to be a terrific player in this league.”
