To benefit from the “emergency QB” tool, the player has to be in the regular 53 man roster. He gets to suit up but doesn’t count against the 47/48 player game day limit of actives

The cowboys can certainly call Milton up mid week but he is just a regular member of the 53 and if he’s dressed, he would count under the 47/48 actives

Bringing in a QB who hasn’t been in your playbook and practices all year would be a pretty desperate move.

I imagine it’s usually easy to plug in jobs that don’t require knowing the schemes in depth. Special teams guys, maybe an edge rusher who is jsut brought in to rush on third down.

Silly? It was a silly move to release Joe Milton - comparable to releasing Ryan Flournoy one year ago (who was not claimed by another team either). The Cowboys got lucky again. In the case of Flournoy, the release cost us one year of contractual control. Flournoy will be a free agent in 2027 instead of one year later. Same with Joe Milton.
