Sam Howell on earning QB2 job: 'The work doesn't stop now'

"I've been a lot of different places and I've backed up a lot of different guys and everybody's kind of different," Howell said. "They kind of have a process here, and there's a lot of help in the quarterback room. [QB coach Steve] Shimko does a good job, adding Will Grier as well helps us a lot. So I 'll ask those guys what they need from me throughout the week and I'll be happy to help."
"I love Dak," Howell said. "Dak's been great to me, he's been a great mentor and it's been fun to learn from him in the meeting room, on the practice field and just in life in general. Dak's a really smart guy, he's a good guy, great teammate, one of the best teammates I've been around. It's been a fun time in the quarterback room… Part of the reason why I wanted to come here was to learn from a guy like Dak. He's been great to me and I'm excited to help him this year."

Ya know...I thought Ocho was crazy for saying the release was to preserve Dak's ego. But that 2nd paragraph of glaze from Howell...geez.

Maybe this is not so much Dak being threatened as much as Dak gets his comfy, dutiful, supportive backup.

That's what some content guys were talking about. Maybe voch. About how Joe wasn't kissing daks butt but Sam would gladly do it. Wouldn't shock me. I don't buy Dak being threatened by Joe but I do think Sam fits the "role" of a backup better than a guy who wanted drake Mayes job

That is not a good way to run the team.

Notice how he didn’t say he was a great guy??

Yep. His job is to spit-shine Dak's patoot and ego.

This is why I have been disappointed in this move - if our theory holds true - and what this says about Schotty. He wants an agreeable atmosphere. I can tell you...when you're dealing with A1 alphas like many of these guys have been there whole lives, you need to infuse and have pressure release valves for tension, anxiety and outright hostility in some instances. I can't think of a dynasty that didn't have this internal tension...even the Giants wildcard teams had it. The recent Eagles team had it.

Dak needs someone who is just as in over his heels as he was back in 2016 nipping at his heels. When 2017 and reality hit, he realized he didn't understand the game fully and he needed work. Romo didn't like it, but who cared?

I hope it's not true. If so schotty is being a hypocrite about the whole compete thing and it will be exposed eventually

I think it is clear Sam Howell fully comprehends his role on the team.
Washington Commanders - 2022–2023 Drafted by Washington in the 5th round (No. 144) in 2022.
Seattle Seahawks - 2024
Minnesota Vikings - 2025
Philadelphia Eagles - 2025
Dallas Cowboys - 2026–present

He knows his way around NFL locker rooms. That experience is another reason why the Cowboys made him #2.

We all know Dak has a fragile psyche...deny it? A guy like Howell tickling his ears all season is just what the Enablers ordered.
Howell is competent. Milton has been nodding but an embarrassment to the position.

No quarterback works be threatened by Milton, who still hasn't bothered to learn a professional playbook.

From what I've heard, Von Miller's a better teammate. Maybe Howell didn't get the memo.

Then why was the competition close?
