Tony Romo statement

He should have followed the dynasty's lead and rented a large private White House with a pool to lounge by with plenty of strippers and blow in the living room. :muttley: Would have saved him all the attention and maybe won us a Super Bowl.
Michael Irvin can testify to such things.

Tony may have become addicted to the painkillers but I also think he still suffers the pain from what he said at the sobriety test and the fact that he was stretching after he got out of the vehicle he was in obvious pain.

Also thinking if his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit and he was still in pain and had to do the stretching exercises just to be able to do the sobriety test I would think he's probably in a good bit of back pain every day.
No i hear you, and I agree he looks like hes in pain and that needs to get better first. I was just saying getting rid of the pain doesn't always fix it.

Tony's statement did not rub me the wrong way.

I've lost no sleep over it.
There was no statement he was going to give that wouldn't get picked apart through a lens of cynicism. I mentioned earlier that I was wondering what he could have said, that would sound like a sincere apology and him owning the situation, that wouldn't sound like a PR team was involved. Didn't get much of a response...

I’m sure Tony will handle this problem. There’s a lot hypocrisy going on here Like some one said earlier most of us have drove over the limit. I personally thought the statement was a bit much. Just be a man and move on.

Here, I'll have a go at it (blueblood length [but makes sense] alert). One, I think you're right in that it would get picked apart no matter what because those are just the times we live in where everything is fake, a conspiracy, or AI.

But for me, the number one thing is the timing. The BAC results come back, lo and behold we finally have a statement (allegedly) from Romo himself. Just a few days prior his "team" issued a statement saying they were working with local authorities over the "isolated civil matter" and would resolve it soon. Methinks the BAC results were known right then and there was no way around it via technicality, etc. so they had to admit responsibility.

Second, the current statement mentioned CBS not once, but twice. The previous statement did once as well. This incident has NOTHING to do with CBS by itself. Nothing. There are repercussions as a result of it that involve CBS, sure, but if it's all about getting well, etc. CBS need not be mentioned at all. Why are they? The money. So that's going to make people do a double take, isn't it?

Third, bringing the whole, "it's the painkillers as a result of playing football" thing into this could serve as a way of lessening the bad stigma effect of driving while intoxicated. Only sports fans care about Tony Romo and it seems this sympathy ploy was aimed to curry favor with them.

Fourth, the statement goes into historical context but if you're going to do that, my main question is going to be how many times did you drive intoxicated before you got caught? Not a good look, sure, but if you're going to be honest and all... But you don't do that most likely because CBS wouldn't want to hear that you've done it dozens of times. But when the camera caught you lying to police and bumbling thru their tests, you do best to be as limited as possible. Problem is that's not the full disclosure this was trying to appear though.

For the record, Romo doesn't owe me or any of us any answers at all and it probably would have been best to keep this super short or just say nothing at all if you were going to attempt to fight it and then have to relent. But when you do and plaster CBS all over your statements, it's not a leap to say who this was probably all for. Basically, reasonable doubt as to sincerity.

Went to see some people here play with a punctured lung.
I absolutely would for the money.

Are you saying wouldn't do likewise for the money? You're a liar if you say no.

Romo isn't special, and neither is any other athlete when it comes to playing through pain. ANYONE of us would do it too because the money is just too good.

Stop putting these guys on a pedestal, and worshiping them as gods. They are no different than other humans. They are just good at playing a specific game.

There is zero hypocrisy in pointing out it's wrong to drive drunk even if one has done so in their past.

It is not hypocrisy to tell your kid to not smoke even if you smoke 3 packs a day, because you know it's a bad choice. This is called wisdom, not hypocrisy.

I find it quite ironic that some of you try and use hypocrisy as some sort of shield and excuse for Romo.

I guarantee many on here drink and drive every once in a while as older adults. That’s my point. We all know it’s wrong. I’m not making excuses for what he did I just think there’s a lot of self righteousness going on

So now you switch from hypocrisy to "self righteousness" that you presume because you want to excuse Romo for reckless and dangerous behavior that could get innocent people killed all because he's too irresponsible to call for a ride that he has more than enough resources to afford.

The only one being self righteous here is you.

Agreed he could have the pain and be very dependent on prescription meds both to the point where if he doesn't have them he gets sick definitely a lot to deal with if he's that deep into it.

Just be glad Tony didn't kill himself or someone else. It could have been so much worse. I've delt with back pain. It's something that never really goes away. I feel sorry for him in that regard.. The only thing I'm mad about is he needed to call someone to drive him. No excuse for driving drunk and he has enough money to hire anybody.

There’s more female members than I thought

I think a lot of it with Tony may come down to simple male ego and pride.

Men flat out do not want to ask for help unless there is no other choice and their back is totally up against the wall

I think he didn't want to call somebody to drive him because it was like admitting he was a drunk and couldn't handle himself pride again not realizing risk versus reward but that's been him his whole life.

Tony's back was destroyed playing football and obviously the surgeries didn't fix it and maybe he's been told there is no fix for it.

So he's destined to a life on painkillers and after a while he realizes he's getting addicted to this and needs to use something else to kill the pain but not end up becoming dope sick from not medicating.

So like many red blooded American men with serious problems that they want to escape from he turns to alcohol and it gets him through and he builds up a tolerance to where he can function drive and pretty much go through his everyday life as a functioning alcoholic with less back pain.

He's not some word slurring slobbering drunk he's got it pretty well under control he thinks until he leaves the golf course after a bad day gets a little cocky and tries to make a pass where he shouldn't.

And everything that had worked out so smoothly in the past and gone on without a hitch all of a sudden spirals into the abyss and here we are.

Furthermore I don't think Tony would intentionally put people at risk I think he felt like his driving was good enough with the amount of alcohol it took to numb his back where he had built up enough of a tolerance that he could drive with no problem.

As far as how sincere Tony is I think he's very sincere I think he's sincerely didn't feel he was putting people at risk and I think he sincerely wants to keep his job at CBS.

This is a master class in how to fit the facts to feed a preconceived opinion. The other side of the "hero worship" coin.

Your number 1 thing doesn't really hold up to any semblance of rational thought. The timing of the statement is obvious and the facts support it.

He was just charged for OWI. He hadn't been charged until now. The details of his bac were just made public very soon after the charges were filed. His statement was put out within 24 hours of the charges being filed.

Clearly the entire timeline hinged on actual charges being filed and those charges hinged on the results of the blood test. As soon as those results came in, the charges were filed, the no contest plea was entered and the statement was put out. All happened in rapid succession. Reading any sort of timeline manipulation into that set of facts is clearly a case of fitting the facts to the opinion instead of fitting the opinion to the facts.

Seems like a pattern.

I don't think it's right for Romo to lose his TV gig permanently over this, but he does need to spend this season away from football.

We had a similar situation with the hockey team I follow a few years where the game analyst had one too many gin drinks before a game at Madison Square Garden and couldn't join the broadcast. The GM relieved him for the rest of the season and he came back better than ever the following year. Rooting for Tony - as I always have.

Is the thread about ANYONE else but Romo? No.

I knew you'd be back. They all are. Lol.

Great. Now do my other points as to why someone would doubt the sincerity of the statement instead of it being a PR legal tool for use later (the actual question). You've tackled 1 of 4. Go!
