This is what needs to be remembered. Yes, there is a dropoff from Smith to Bass. But Bass is also more than good enough to keep the offense humming along until Smith returns.

Things were going to smooth and too good for this team , this is big loss here not having Tyler Smith at left guard against this Giants front 7. Wow, why wait until a week before the first game to have thumb surgery.

Here are Tyler Smith's ratings, per PFF:

'Tyler Smith is an offensive guard for the Dallas Cowboys who earned a 73.5 overall PFF grade in the 2025 season, 15th among 81 qualified offensive guards. He played 1,110 offensive snaps on the season.

His PFF pass-blocking grade of 65.4 ranked 29th among 81 qualified offensive guards. His run-blocking grade of 81.1 ranked 5th at the position.
He allowed 26 total pressures in pass protection. That total included 3 sacks and 0 hits allowed to opposing pass rushers. He was flagged for 11 penalties over the course of the season.'

So, the big fall-off is in run blocking with Bass. My question--when Bass played last year, what position did he generally line up at?

They tendered Bass over Hoffman. Bass getting like $5 million this year. Worth a 2nd round draft pick. There were no teams interested in signing him for that.

Is this why. Dallas felt that good about him. Hope they made the right decision.

Very stupid coaching and management decision. Hoffman was the most game experienced one by far. Plus, these dummies cut him for nothing while Hoffman went and signed with the Steelers for only $2.5 million...Half of the cost the Cowboys ended paying the far lesser experienced Bass who cost $5 million to keep.

Pretty huge deal to me when you have to now start the season without our best OL with the questions we have at the bookend spots already.

Smith's health is starting to really become a concern. He played most of last season hurt and clearly wasn't 100%. 80% of Smith is still a starting guard, but he wasn't an All-Pro.

Now he's going to miss the first month of this season, and who knows if it will linger.
