Possible reason they chose Howell over Milton

Schottenheimer said they were "neck and neck" so $2.5 million guaranteed would tilt that scale especially if he signed with another team as a free agent if he cleared waivers.

I get the emotional factor you have with this, but this was not about which is better or worse, but simply a likely reason why the Cowboys made the decision they did when they needed the roster spot and were forced to choose.

They can still bring Milton back to the PS if he clears waivers and wants to return.

If they had done it in the reverse order, then they risked paying $2.5 million (money and salary cap) to Howell to play for another team.
It's as good a reason as any. But I heard the counter to this was that they had to pay Sam Williams 2 million and they released him.

I think the 2.5m guaranteed has more meat to it than people think. That could indicate they had already made up their mind as to who would back up Dak before the first preseason game was played. If that's the case, backups vs backups in preseason wasn't changing anyone's mind.

Yes makes total sense that Cooper rush with more mobility can in emergency situation be better than Milton a very green guy who's never been in that situation at all You are definitely correct I agree with you for once
you should agree more often. I am the voice of reason on this board.

Completely wrong. Howell is respected as an NFL caliber quarterback. Milton is not. By anyone. Including Dallas.
Just amazing how Milton clears waivers meaning no NFL team is interested in him, but his little fan club is twisting and turning and fighting for reasoning to proclaim that he's the greatest thing since Clint Longley. Obsession noted.

He didn't do anything in preseason that impressed football coaches.

He doesn't' play the position like an NFL quarterback. That's been proven over and over.

Playing against vanilla defenses and guys that are now all cut proves nothing. He didn't do these things against the Saints and Rams in the practices.

Howell can run the REAL offense from the huddle through the checks and play. Milton can't.
You need to standup dude, nobody can hear ya!

I am guessing, Milton's ego grew when ex-players in the media and on podcasts kept saying he is a starter in this league. Rather than dealing with this, the Cowboys released him. Did he ask for his release? Maybe.
Dude got cut for a scrub RB from AZ.

Then gets left on the PS.

Doesn’t even get to be the emergency QB3.

Really, he wasn't that good???? Well, there were a lot of Cowboy Forumers who thought Milton's play should light a fire under Prescot's behind because Milton's play in the first couple of preseason games was NFLish! On January 5, 2025, Milton made his professional debut in the season finale against the Buffalo Bills after relieving Maye, who departed after the opening drive. Milton finished 22-of-29 for 241 yards and accounted for two touchdowns. When he got traded to the Cowboys, he played in 4 games, did he set the NFL on fire, heck no, but with a couple of more years sitting and learning he could turn into a pretty dam good back. He's athletic and he has a live arm.
He's a scrub. He may have the physical attributes, but he doesn't have what it takes between the ears. I don't care how many drills you run, you're not fixing that.
