Not really that bad for a player who sees quite a few snaps with the starters. He's essentially a sixth starting OL who can occasionally catch the ball. Plus, it probably builds as it goes, so the first couple of years will be relatively cheap.

The salary cap for next year is projected to be in the $327-330M range.

That puts his deal at about 1.8% of the cap. That's nothing and likely saves the Cowboys money because he would have commanded more after this season.

He's their 2nd string TE, that isn't much for the amount of snaps he gets. But if you count this years money too then the avg is only a little more than 4.75 million a year. The chiefs 2nd string TE makes 6 million a year.
