Signed by Cowboys Cowboys extend Flournoy - 1 year $6m

Exactly my first reaction. Makes little sense.

Then again, I realize the stakes are different, but this does set him up for life if he has a serious injury (assuming it’s guaranteed for that) and doesn’t live extravagantly, but I still don’t see the logic overall.

Talk about betting against yourself. I wonder if he is truly worried about losing WR3 snaps to Brown.
Yea I don't really buy the injury thing because these guys all have insurance for that (it's also rare that it really matters).

What he's really done is prevent himself from being Tolbert (signed for $1.4m this year) which is essentially betting against himself.

Most were high on Flo. Now he gets paid for one year and some are disappointed and think he was signed to early and/or too much. I don’t get it.
At first I did.
But looked, and remembered he was a RFA. If he continued to improve and has an another good year. Which no reason to believe he would not. Then they would been negotiating a new contract. And Probably would have tendered a 2nd round pick for him.
Which probably would been more than the $6 million. As last year a 2nd round tender was $5 million for Bass.

This removes all of that.

Same for Spann-Ford, as he would have been an URFA.

I’m still wondering if he doesn’t seriously expect to lose snaps to Brown. That’d be surprising, considering the experience factor and that Flournoy has been good overall.

I’ll bet you on that, dude is an elite blocker and an underrated receiver.

Also, his salary isn’t unheard of for a TE2. So unless he forgets how to block or never catches any passes his deal will be fine.
he caught 9 passes last year.lets say he doubles that and make it 20.no team EXCEPT the cowboys will pay 6 million a year for 20 catches.this is worse than the Leupke contract.

How do we know he's not going to become a bigger part of the offense this year? And look around the NFL at TE 2 contracts and you will see Spann-Ford is not overpaid.

Ok, genuinely shocked. They must really like him. FWIW, he's always jumped off the screen and I've often wondered why he doesn't get more burn. Now, it's pretty obvious why...but I gotta believe he's a better option than Ferguson as a general pass catcher. Last year Fergie looked like he was running with cement block shoes.

Ask the chiefs what they pay their backup TE. 6M a year ain’t much at all, especially if he’s still the elite blocker and redzone threat he can be.

You’re going to be pleasantly surprised. Also, Luepke’s deal isn’t that crazy either lol.

Allow me to bring up a point Ive not seen yet.

Dallas has limited number 9f draft picks this year. All signs point heavily toward them using at least some capital before the deadline.

Little - some = less.

To help offset that They are locking up a couple of young players now they want on the team so they have to worry about replacing them next year and beyond.

For less than 4% of total projected cap next year.

I'm kind of surprised we haven't already extended Broderick Jones as the swing tackle/potential RT starter. Considering the price to acquire him, I'm expecting us to do something similar to what we've done with Flournoy here.

He is a bit different situation, but I agree with you on that. But I also think that's a target in draft at some point.

Off topic has anyone seen Bleecher Reports waybtoo early mock draft?

He’s prototype modern TE size and is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league

With 18 catches for 178 yards in his career, you have to assume the coaches saw something they feel they can build on in the passing game that his limited use hasn’t shown. He’s had one single memorable catch.

It's a great strategy if you can execute it well.
Problem is, we have signed the wrong players early.
Mostly.
Usually to larger pieces of the pie. These 2 guys are but a smidgen. And in both cases saved yourself having to 2nd round tender them.

They are making much wiser moves than in past.
