This is getting scary (Ai-related)

Most likely virtue signaling so they can get ahead of actual regulations.

Good overview of this

Led by the guy (David Sacks) that was picked to be the White House A.I. and Crypto Czar.

No conflict of interest I’m sure of it.

What Sacks is basically saying is, sure go ahead, if you want to lose out on money. That’s the wrong motivation.

Even Elon Musk is agreeing with the other AI to slow down the pace of frontier research without safegaurds.

From what Ive heard.(not sure if it's credible) that China is funding the anti data centers movement in the United States to scare all the gullible looking for a boogeyman.
Do you believe that though?

What could China possibly say that would be more damaging than what the CEOs of the AI companies have already told us? They basically said, "If things go according to plan, in the not-so-distant future a lot of people are going to lose their jobs". That's a pretty wild way to start the conversation.

Throw in water utilization, noise, and utility rates going up and it's pretty easy to understand the pushback. You don't need a conspiracy on this one. People are already feeling the effects and the worst effect hasn't even arrived yet.

It's highly probable that China is investing heavily on a national resistance to AI here in the states while continuing with their piracy of intellectual property, in particular, AI models here and abroad.

This sudden and seemingly united front against AI and data centers doesn't pass the smell test. Should there be guardrails with respect to AI? Of course. Can AI survive without electrical power? How do we protect ourselves from AI sequences generated in countries with bad intent?

I believe it is critical for the U.S. to be the global AI leader or someone else will step up and that may not be the greatest outcome for humanity.

Wait, what?

So China is getting Sam Altman, Dario Amadai, Elon Musk, and all the major AI players to undermine advancement and sow resistance to AI in the United States?

Makes total sense.

There are numerous levels of undercurrents to be recognized here. Those players you name are all in on AI and have been for years. Their concerns are warranted and should be addressed with their collaboration as leaders in the field.

China is a completely separate threat that needs to be taken seriously.

Right. These are all the leaders in AI that have been saying we should slowdown the world ace of AI advancement for years (I don’t know if Elon has always felt that).

The first data center specifically constructed to serve AI purposes was in 2024, so this why we are just now hearing pushback from the public. This is an emerging issue, not something that people have known about for decades.

The affects of AI are being WAY overblown with misinformation coming from China that has a vested interest in winning the AI race against the United States. I agree these data centers shouldn't be built in residential areas and from what I understand data centers will have to build their own dedicated power grids not tie into the main power grid.
We can't afford to lose the AI race to China for military reasons alone.

AI is here to stay no matter how much resistance there is to it.

As far as conspiracy goes. I debunk them, not promote them.

We have all seen what happens when you give the gov org power over the people, see 2020-21 when schools were shut down, businesses went out of business because they were not allowed to open, 6 foot distancing which we all knew was a bunch of krap.

Sachs has not been AI czar since March. Industry leaders calling for regulation, hmmm that’s a funny one. Is it due to the fact that they are already the kingpins in the AI industry and putting in future controls takes out the future competition of the little guy as it makes it more difficult and expensive to compete?!

Which information is China responsible for? There are legitimate reasons to be opposed, especially if it’s coming to your neighborhood.

In terms of creating their own power, show me the legislation that requires it. Doesn’t exist. Plants are already operable, being built, and drawing from the grid. Some may be providing their own power, but that’s so far been a choice not a requirement.

Obviously AI isn’t going anywhere but that doesn’t mean everyone has to just bend over as their cost of living goes up with every new data center coming online.

Love how folks think this is simply a matter of agents doing what they’ve been instructed to do.

Here is a good one that cuts through the panic and explains it fairly.

I still think War Games is the movie that will most likely tragically predict the future. We better hope AI goes sentient quickly, because it's the only thing that will prevent a code from not understanding true human intentions, and may just feel some guilt or remorse as it pushes the red button because it solves an Agentic AI mission.

And as far as the rumors that AI companies are scared because they didn't see it developing this fast.... dude.... are you not paying attention to current progress?

100 years ago, diabetes was a death sentence.
50 years ago, stage 1 cancer was a death sentence.
20 years ago, HIV was a death sentence.
Soon, we'll be finding the right genetic formulas to extend life to 200.

100 years ago, complicated gears and key cards did the best calculations
50 years ago, personal computers and data tape started taking storm
20 years ago, we started using the first smart phones
Soon, quantum computing will hit and make Y2K fears look like nothing when all crypto-technology is quickly unraveled.

Before you read this know that I am not debating about the validity of the concerns that AI is introducing to the world.

That said, (and this is a realistic assessment) protesting US companies is not going to stop AI, so I fail to understand what the point or goal of these stances, protests, etc. are?

China's AI industry is exploding just like the US and the same is happening with other countries in the world as well though the US and China seem to have advanced the most so far.

China's AI LLMs are not far behind those in the US and China is starting to produce their own AI related chips to reduce their dependency on Nvidia and other companies and to overcome the already tight restrictions in place for exports of AI hardware like higher end GPUs.

At some point the US government will put regulations in place on the AI industry, but even with those regulations, it's only going to slow down the US while having little to no impact on the rest of the world.

I really am curious if you know of any realistic ideas on how to slow down the AI evolution on a global lev

I knew about the OpenAI/HF attack right after it happened, and I agree, that's a perfect example of what can happen even when guardrails are in place.

I have a different theory why the CEOs are asking the government to regulate the industry and while maybe on some level its to limit competition, I think the main reason is they want to slow everyone down because they all believe they can train much better AI LLMs if they were not being pushed to maintain relevancy by constantly releasing new models.

For example, instead several version x.1/x.2, etc. releases, they could actually produce higher quality AI LLMs if they could release x.0/x.5 versions with a long duration between releases.

As it is, they cannot do that because one of their competitiors is releasing them just as fast as they are and the revenue models they have would suffer during the release lull periods if they were the only ones releasing a new model every few months.

Again though, I'm not discounting or debating your concerns because they are quite valid and I think most people are worried on some level.

The question I asked though is the same .. how do you restrict AI on a global level when you know some countries are not going honor it privately regardless of what they claim they're doing publicly?

Until we have an answer for that, I just don't see a way to slow down the AI progression.

It reminds me of the early days of viruses (this was before the internet) when people asked, "How do I avoid computer viruses?" and the answer was simple .. never connect a modem and never install or run any new programs.

I don't see the world disconnecting and I don't trust any of the countries to restrain their AI research and advancements even if they publicly say they will.
Overly simplified but in general.....When it comes to AI, you must be on the leading edge or you're last. Don't stop, can't stop progressing because it will continue to evolve without you. Defining rules of engagement is another topic that needs to happen, but we can't put advancement on hold while we wait. Nobody else will be waiting

Literally the worst way to go about it.

There’s no other point in history where a trillion dollar industry was left unregulated.
