What is the deal with Barham?

I think what's odd to me, is I felt like with some rooks, the issue is over pursuing or a late hit or something that is a negative but correctable.
Him just jogging or not playing at 100% was odd to me. I think after the 3rd dump pass he was upset, and his body language was clear he was annoyed at something. But then on the 4th dump off that led to a TD he's jogging on an angle that had he gone full speed he could of at least shoved the RB.

Could this just be an one off? Possible. But just a bit of a bummer seeing a rook just half assing it in a game that was not a blowout and still a 1 score game.

He's a rush edge, not a ILB. He also seems to not give 100% effort all the time.

Hmmm... he played 3 seasons as an inside linebacker. He played one as an edge because Michigan was short at the position.
Hes a lot closer to an indide LB than an edge!

So I have been out of the loop most of preseason. From what I read though Barham was one of the rookie standouts. Sunday was his first NFL game so you have to give him some grace, but what is the deal with his effort. There are several plays showing him jogging to the ball. A really bad look. Regardless of his talent, I would send a message to him and make him inactive. Being on the field is a privilege, not a right. You got to go 100% every play.

Yes, make your highest graded LB inactive.

Look, I get he’s a rookie 3rd-round pick and still finding his footings, but his effort outside the tackle box is unacceptable. When the play stays inside, he’s explosive and triggers fast. But the moment it bounces to the edge, he starts coasting. I’ve seen him straight-up jog on plays where he easily had an angle—not just yesterday against the Giants, but in Preseason Game 3, too. If you sprint and miss the tackle, fine. But jogging right next to the ball carrier? That’s wild. If I’m on the coaching staff, I’m lighting him up in film review. You can’t put that kind of low-effort tape out there.

But he wasnt showing the energy.

He looked like a guy who played with his hair on fire in college. Im going to assume he was gassed from lack of actual game time in preseason and confused. Otherwise its worse, hes a quitter.

Anyways, in real games, he looked poor with a lack of effort and a dumb penalty.

Holy overreaction. A rookie 3rd round pick. I agree the effort stuff is concerning. I’m just not sure I’d jump straight to making him inactive after his first NFL game. I’d definitely address it with him and make it clear that kind of effort isn’t acceptable, but I’d want to see how he responds before taking away his reps. The talent is obviously there, so if it’s a correctable issue, hopefully the coaches can get that fixed quickly. He can't get better on the sideline.

Honestly, I think the camera angle here makes the effort look way worse than it actually is.

He seems to be a football loving guy, but yeah, there’s a reason rookies generally don’t step into the league and set the world on fire.

One play does not make a player. He looked a little confused out there to me but so did the rest of the defense. The one play he loafed to the sideline was a combination of not seeing the play soon enough and then giving up probably because he realized he was already toast.

Yep. I totally like his physical traits but if he's another absolutely no instincts clone of Murray and Luifau between the ears then I'm sure I'll be regretting it sooner than later.

Anyway it definitely makes you feel like you’ve already made it. Now i can’t say fot certain that matters not ive always wondered.
