What does Ferguson do better than Spann-Ford?

I want to make sure this is a merit based team and not just his buddy buddy club
Ferguson is a blocking TE with limitations as a receiver.
Spann-Ford is a blocking TE who's even more limited as a receiver.
Both are playing in a system that doesn't use the TE for much beyond a check down receiver and red zone target.
If you research Schottenheimer stints as an Offensive Coordinator you'll find that what you've seen over the last season and almost quarter is the extent of his use of the position.
You could clone Gronk and you'd still get 400 yards at an 8 ypc average!

The decision to extend Ferguson was poorly researched by Jerry. Until they can get out of the contract a healthy Ferguson is the starter by default!

Not much at this point.

Ferg knows where to settle down in the soft parts of under-zones, and he has good hands (although he isn't asked to pull in very difficult throws). But if you want to open up the negatives... man. He's a nonexistant YAC threat. His average depth of target is under five yards. He fumbles at a frequency that would get a running back benched. He gets clowned as a blocker. He's basically old-man Witten, but even slower and with a fumbling problem.

BSF is a great blocker, and his open-field movement is what got him paid above being a 6th offensive lineman. We haven't seen him employed very adventurously in the receiving game (does Schotty even call TEs to run anything besides checkdowns?). But even if he runs nothing but flats and hitches, his blocking and YAC skill alone open up the base offense beyond what Fergy can do.

Really good break down man.
Ferg IS the older go down and post up before the 1st down marker power forward Witten.

Maybe a half step faster than the old version Witten at this point.

Spann Ford is like when talking about a new running back and using the description of fresh legs and burst.
My opinion.

A lot of folks are questioning Ferguson and for good reason. Too many turnovers for one and no YAC. But what we don’t see is behind the scenes in the locker room, on the practice field, etc. One thing they do like about him is his toughness. He doesn’t back down from anyone and this team needs that kind of mentality.

At this point the only thing Spann-Ford does better is putting a hurt on opposing players. He has yet to prove that he's a #1 TE for our team. To see if he is he needs to play more. Maybe there's a reason he doesn't. He could be like Blue or Kelvin Joseph, his playbook could have dust on it.
