What does Ferguson do better than Spann-Ford?

Corny celebrations. Ferg was actually catching tds vs man coverage in 2023. Now he just catches passes up the seam or red zone bootlegs like any basic tight end.

Ferg fumbles better. In fact, he fumbles better than anyone else in the NFL.
Ok over the last 5 years the leagues fumble leaders:

2021: Dak Prescott - 14
2022: Justin Fields - 16
2023: Joshua Dobbs - 14
2024: Kirk Cousins and Baker Mayfield - 13 each
2025: Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and Cam Ward - 11 each

For Fergs career here are the numbers:

2022 - 0
2023 - 0
2024 - 4
2025 - 3
2026 (3 games) - 1
Career - 8 with 5 lost

Ferguson is a blocking TE with limitations as a receiver.
Spann-Ford is a blocking TE who's even more limited as a receiver.
Both are playing in a system that doesn't use the TE for much beyond a check down receiver and red zone target.
If you research Schottenheimer stints as an Offensive Coordinator you'll find that what you've seen over the last season and almost quarter is the extent of his use of the position.
You could clone Gronk and you'd still get 400 yards at an 8 ypc average!

The decision to extend Ferguson was poorly researched by Jerry. Until they can get out of the contract a healthy Ferguson is the starter by default!
It's weird because previous to this QB (or maybe recently might be more accurate?) ...we've always had downfield TEs.

Maybe not gonzalez-like but 10-15 yards anyway. And got them the ball especially on critical downs.

Yall can be so fickle. Schotty is fighting for his job every week which is one reason coaches are slow to go full tilt with young talent that isn't drafted high. Ford has surpassed Schoon which is a good sign. He just needs to keep working but Fergy is still the best TE on this roster.

Since 2024, he leads fumbles per carry by a huge margin. Someone posted the exact numbers in another thread but it was eye popping. Like he was 1 fumble per 18 touches and next worst was like every 45 touches.

Yeah,
That was in McCarthy and Garrett's offense.
Even in Seattle when Russell Wilson was throwing for 2 of his 3 highest yardage seasons with Schottenheimer as the coordinator the TEs barely eclipsed 300 yards.
The position has been underutilized wherever he's been!

I want to make sure this is a merit based team and not just his buddy buddy club
This entire organization is NOT a meritocracy. It is completely centered on a Buddy-Buddy relationship, lol.

Examples - The first and most critical qualification to be a Cowboys front office executive is DNA not actual football qualifications. No accountability- no merit based decision making. Buddy-Buddy.

So…when it comes to players, the number one merit a player must have is a high paying contract. Because that means JJ and SJ have determined they are “stars” and to bench them would indicate a mistake made by guys whose egos can’t accept that. So those type of players are the Jones’ “buddies”.

Even the HC is safe here, not based on merit, but based on how many years are left on their contract. See Dave Campo, Jason Garrett, and even Mike McCarthy, who although is a way better HC than the other guys, should have been fired after that Packer loss. But he had one year left and Jerry is cheap.

Merit based organization? Clearly not in Dallas.
