Only the Dallas Cowboys could look at a defense with TWO sacks in three games and decide the missing piece was a cornerback.

Not a pass rusher.

Not someone who can collapse the pocket.

Not someone capable of making a quarterback feel even mildly inconvenienced.

A cornerback.

The Cowboys have zero sacks over the last two games. Opposing quarterbacks have enough time in the pocket to make a sandwich, check their email, update their fantasy lineup and then wait for somebody to come open.

So Jerry Jones looked at that mess and said, “You know what would fix this? Let’s trade a future second-round pick for Joey Porter Jr.”

Brilliant.

That’s like watching your house burn down and ordering a new doorbell.

Porter is at his best when he can get physical and play press-man coverage. Dallas plays a zone-heavy system roughly 70 percent of the time.

So naturally, the Cowboys traded premium draft capital for a corner whose best skill doesn’t match the defense they currently run.

Either change the scheme or explain what the hell the plan is.

Because right now, the plan appears to be asking Porter to cover receivers for nine seconds while the defensive line politely waits for the quarterback to finish reading the entire field.

And it gets better.

Porter hasn’t played a single game this season because of a back injury. He is in the final year of his rookie contract and reportedly wants more than $30 million per season.

Dallas gave up a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick for the privilege of inheriting the injury, the contract dispute and the questionable scheme fit.

Oh, and Porter has committed 38 penalties in three seasons.

That part actually makes perfect sense.

Dallas led the NFL with 133 accepted penalties last season, so at least they found someone who already understands the culture.

Welcome to the Cowboys, Joey. Your jersey, locker and weekly holding penalty are ready.

To be clear, Porter is a talented player. He could absolutely improve this secondary.

But cornerback was not the fire currently burning down the building.

The fire is a pass rush with two sacks in three games and none since Week 1. The fire is opposing quarterbacks standing comfortably in the pocket until someone eventually gets open. The fire is a defense that cannot finish a pressure, end a drive or get off the field when it matters.

A great corner can help a pass rush by making the quarterback hold the ball longer.

But eventually, somebody still has to sack him.

Dallas apparently forgot that part.

This is what the Cowboys always do. They make the loud move instead of the logical move. Jerry gets a recognizable name, the media gets a week of content and fans are expected to pretend the defense has been fixed.

Meanwhile, the pass rush still couldn’t get home if you gave it a GPS and paid for the tolls.

Only the Dallas Cowboys could have no pass rush, run a zone-heavy defense and solve both problems by trading a premium pick for an injured press-man corner who needs a massive new contract.

Jerry Jones isn’t building a defense.

I agree with you 100% but truth be told, 3/4ths of the starting secondary is out for a month and bodies were needed. I'm kinda ok acquiring a talented DB and not just a dumpster dive guy. Now the right thing for Jerry to do would be to solidify this move by adding another pressure player to the team

Dumb post

Who said cowboys can’t also go get a pass rusher?

This idea that oh we traded for the wrong player / position is so naive and stupid. Cowboys defense is trash and needs multiple players. Get as many good players on this defense as you can get. Now go get a pass rusher too before the deadline

Jerry loves the limelight. Takes the spotlight off of his incompetent coach. Don't think this will fix the defense much. I guess the sentiment is we never do anything in the second round anyway. Wait until we try to negotiate his new contract. That could be epic. I don't care what he says now. He has no loyalty to the Cowboys.

Lol, he wrote all of that nonsense only for it to not stand up to a little common sense.

What's with all the double spacing? LOL

Anyway, I don't disagree the Cowboys need a pass rush but the opportunity was there for Porter. I don't know who was available to help the pass rush. And, the Cowboys have too many injuries at CB. Further, the CBs weren't any good before the injuries.

The time to fix the pass rush was in the off-season. There were a few players available and Dallas ignored them all.

I don’t love the trade, BUT I will say that if JPJ does perform at a high level it gives you way more flexibility with your secondary. Not only with their ability to bring more pressure via extra defenders on the blitz but you might see bland kick down into a slot role which he’s thrived in previously. That lets you transition Caleb Downs into more of a freelance type of safety.

I’d much prefer a front 7 player to improve the defense, but this isn’t exactly a bad thing. Acquiring talented players is always good….

where the heck you been bro? I havent seen your name in ages.
Whats up bro

Just watching the cowboys, hoping we can actually get over the hump, with all this talent we have. We have the best talent on paper, but still can’t get out of our own way.

I use to get mad, I just shake my head. Waiting for the Dak era to be over and maybe we can start fresh.

I really don’t know what will help

Please tell me - which Pro Bowl/HOF-caliber player is on the block right now?? It’s better to get another outstanding CB than a bottom 50 Edge. It is what it is. We know what we need in the next draft/FA cycle. Get a clue.

Yall act like getting a man corner (we plan zone 70 percent of the time) helps our pass rush lol.

Ill see you at the end of the season when we still dont make the playoffs, and our d is still getting gashed because we cant get to the QB.
