ESPN: Trade for Joey Porter Jr. doesn't solve Cowboys' defensive woes

no team has a defense full of good players. good defenses scheme their way to fit the players they have. CP has players playing out of position trying to make his scheme work and isn't adjusting. thats why the same mistakes keep happening.
See Houston.

I think the Porter trade was good trade. For the most part he is a healthy man to man cornerback that wants to get paid. Porter will get that chance in the last 14 games of the season. Supposedly he is the type of cornerback CP is looking for.

Wow, what an unintelligent dolt McCoy is.
He is terrible. Some of his takes are straight up wrong. Considering his football experience he should know better. For example, the day after the Porter trade, his take was 'why would you trade for a player with a bad back'. Really???

First, you said all-pro. Something very different from pro bowl.

Second, none of those players you mentioned will make even the pro bowl this year.

Claiming all-pro or even pro bowl talent because we have guys that once upon a time were at that level may feel good but it’s not being realistic about the quality of our players.
They all of a sudden can’t play at an even adequate level? They won’t make the pro bowl bc they can’t play well anymore and we aren’t talented or they aren’t being given the right scheme and opportunity to excel?
If the former, why are we paying them so much? If the latter then is talent really the main issue?

I didn’t say they can’t be adequate. A couple of them can actually be average to good.

I just think talking about guys like Bland, Clark, Gary and Miller as being true difference makers is looking at them through rose colored glasses and remembering what they did years ago and not what they can do this year and next.

I’ve said before that coaching can help mediocre players become average but it’s unrealistic to expect them to turn average players into stars.

Right but coaching should be able to turn this crew into at least a mid-range level defense. Q, Bland, Clark, and Gary aren’t THAT far removed from being perceived to be among the best at their position. I just can’t buy they can’t play all of a sudden. Then add Downs and Barham seems to be decent and I just have a hard time buying lack of talent is really the main issue. Every defense has multiple holes but most coaches find the scheme and ability to mold the unit into something passable. Talent mismatch to scheme? Maybe but not just devoid of talent
