Aikman on why he retired

[CT Dal Fan]

Aikman is on record saying his back issues forced him to retire, not the concussions. Either way, watching him in the 2000 season was sad. You could tell his skills eroded beyond salvaging.

The Aikman love is ridiculous. He was a great qb here until he wasn’t. He’s been a solid broadcaster after that. The people that think he’s the second coming to football and some kind of football savant are delusional.

We just appreciate the memories he helped build. Same as Jimmy, Emmitt etc, etc. No one said he's a know it all that can levitate a helmet.

Stephen " air quote " Jones wants to know what you are beeching and moaning about.

Yep, what drought are you referring to?

No the only delusional people around here are the ones that believe Jerry's lies and think anything he does will lead to a SB. For those of us who watched the Dynasty in action, we hold those players and coaches in high esteem. Maybe if we actually had something to cheer about the last 30 years but one failure after another.

[Reverend Conehead]

Aikman stopped playing because he was cooked. If any team actually wanted him to play they would have offered him legit money and he would have played.

Aikman sought out a starting QB gig. He did not get one. That really tells you everything you really need to know.

He could have accepted the Eagles deal. That team was in a pickle having lost their starting QB, and Aikman was available. Andy Reid offered it to him.

[Reverend Conehead]

Seeing Norton with the 49ers was tough. And Emmitt with the Cardinals was hard.

Oh, God, how did I forget that one. That one was so hard I think I blocked it out.

Some people are both talented and driven and Troy had both in spades. That does not however mean that their judgement or football creativity are sufficient to run a team. I believe that he falls in that category as well. He was physically gifted. There is no doubt about that, but people shouldn't fool themselves into thinking he could be a GM and excel.

[Chasing6]

I think the most interesting part of this is that he intended to keep playing and would have if Norv Turner had signed him in San Diego, then he almost got Miami. What stands out to me was Aikman was driven away from the Cowboys organization because of their bad decisions.

The part that made me cringe was that he got an offer to play for the Eagles. Thank God he turned that one down. That would have been really sickening to see him in an Eagles uniform. I've cringed when I saw Cowboys players in another team's uniform as follows:

John Niland in an Eagles uniform.
Calvin Hill in a Washington uniform.
Herschel Walker in an Eagles uniform.
Ken Norton Jr. in a 49ers uniform.

Thank God I was spared seeing Aikman in an Eagles uniform.

[Hadenough]

There's probably a little truth to that, but Aikman wasn't going to tell the truth back then. Maybe he didn't want to smear Jerry and the organization like he basically did in this interview. And he still didn't really bash Jerry by name, he just said he wasn't happy with decisions that were being made.

Jerry literally crushed the organization back then, and is still causing harm to this day.

This organization has struggled with decisions for so long. From hiring coaches to drafting players! Its just sickening when you see other organizations go through complete cycles and continually rebound while the Cowboys seem to be happy with mediocrity.

[Ranching]

I heard Aikman quit because of the concussions.

Yes, but he forgot...

But the unwarranted Dak love is OK, right?

4 NFCCG's and 3 super bowls vs. 2-5 playoff record - in case you needed a reminder why Aikman belongs on a much higher pedestal than #4.

Then I'm delusional. Aikman was a rock. Accurate with great decision making.

[calico]

The people who made those decisions are still repeating them over and over all these years later.

This is why I don’t follow the cowboys with emotion any more. They are a shell of what they should be and I won’t believe in them again until they actually prove it on the field.

I'm a Dak fan but a bigger Aikman fan.He was something in there

..its ok Troy. You helped bring 3 championships to the org.

YOu cant play forever. Besides back then taking licks was brutal.

Not like today.

Yeah his career would’ve likely been longer and even more productive under current rules. I don’t think Brady would’ve lasted as long when it was legal to take head and leg shots on QBs. Troy would’ve been fine for another 4-5 seasons imo

Jerry covets his own players. Which is a big reason we're kept in this cycle of mediocrity.

Brady wouldn't have lasted 5 seasons in the 70s/80s.

bro was miserable from 94 onward, and it really didn't have much to do with his physical health.

Thanks for the early morning gut punch...

If the man had the same offensive line at age 34 that he had at 26 he might have squeezed out a couple more years at best.
