At what point do the defensive assistant coaches start taking some heat? Looking through their coaching careers I see many that were one year and done in previous coaching positions. The secondary and edges have been horrendous and doesn’t seem to be improving.

I've posted many times recently that better coaching is needed because the roster isn't this bad. Honestly, I think it’s fair to start (maybe past time) putting some heat on the Cowboys’ defensive assistants already! When you consistently can’t stop the run, generate pressure, or tackle, you have to look beyond the players and start questioning the coaching, too. That new and improved defensive staff we were told about in the off season.

The big question is whether we’re dealing with players not executing, a scheme that isn’t working), or coaches failing to put guys in positions to succeed. We've seen evidence of all three. Those are all different problems, but it’s the coaching staff’s job to identify them and make the necessary adjustments.

I’m not saying anyone should be fired after a couple of bad games, and I understand Parker is a first-year DC. But that shouldn’t give the staff a free pass, either. I’d like to see some real improvement over the next three or four games, which would take us to about the halfway point of the season.

My biggest concern is accountability. If we keep hearing that the same mistakes are correctable, but we continue to see those mistakes week after week, at some point you have to ask whether the coaches are actually getting through to these players. Eventually, the results have to match the talk. Especially from Jerry.

One and 2 year contracts for assistant coaches is by design. It a networking strategy by the NFL to get as many people working with as many people as possible so when a first time head coach or first time coordinator (who's given deference to hire or have a say his own assistants) have a large pool of candidates they've worked and are familiar with in the hope that it will improve their chances of early success
Assistants who stay for more than 2 seasons with the same team usually either aren't interested in moving up, didn't garner much interest or in a few cases didn't want to relocate family again at that time for whatever reason.
If I remember correctly these assistants were some of the most highly thought of ones around the league we've hired in years. There was at least more thought process put into it than the previous season when we just hired a collection of people from Eberfluss previous Bears staff.

Maybe it's time to look at the reality that it's been 3 different systems in 3 consecutive years with 3 years of the same results and maybe give the players the time to learn the system before changing the system!

While that is a very well thought out defense of the assistant coaches. I still contend that this defensive coaching staff is inept and that most of them have not been retained past their initial first year because they were not good coaches. The proof is the travesty we are seeing in the field the last five weeks. The players may not be a top unit, but they are not this bad.

Except Ansley just came off a 2 year stint with Green Bay, Smith 3 yr with Cardinals, Dixon 2 yr with Vikings, Uzi Dribe 3 with Georgia, Symons 2 etc!

The staff really does need a more experienced person around. Could bring them in as a consultant and give the D coaches someone a bit more experienced to bounce ideas off.

Lots of injuries to overcome early on.

A new coordinator can't just pick all of his preferred assistant coaches...Most of them are already employeed.

The Cowboys didn't have the option to keep Quinn or Zimmer.

Did any fan want them to keep Eberflus?

Zimmerman was always a short term option. He should never had been hired to begin with!

Al Harris would have been nice to hold on to. Our defensive backs immediately got better the day he came to Dallas and they got worse the day he left.

The fact that like 5 starters from other teams came here in the last year and every one of them is WORSE is VERY concerning. People come here and play worse with this D…..coaching and scheme has to be a part of it, that and culture. Winters was better than this last year, Gary (who always was just average anyway) and Clark were better than this in GB, Thompson was definitely better in Arizona, and of course Q was better playing in NY. Those were all quality starter to all pro players on their other teams, and now they looking nothing like what they did. This can’t be all players, they can’t be this freakin bad.

Al Harris and Dan Quinn did a great job. We lost Quinn to a head coaching position. Not really sure why we lost Al Harris.
Al Harris and Dan Quinn combo was pretty good for us. Though good teams still had their way with our defense. Especially the Packers in the playoffs.
